My name is Trudi Jameson and I am the proud owner of the Durham office.
I would like to share my story of why I brought Home Instead to Durham and Chester le Street.
My mum needed help to remain living in her own home after my dad passed away, she was desperate not to move to a residential care home, she was only 64 years old.
I was working full time, so I was limited with how much I could do for her, so I arranged for her to have home care 4 times a day. From the very first visit there were problems, breakfast visits would happen at 11am, there were many, many missed visits and combined visits where the teatime and bedtime visit would happen at the same time, usually around 6pm.
My mum was constantly distressed, which meant I was constantly stressed, she would phone me in tears, upset that she was still in bed, or hadn't had a meal or her medication.
I have worked in and managed health and social care services since leaving school at the end of the 80's and I was frustrated that even knowing the care system, I could not get her the care she needed and deserved, despite making numerous complaints and switching to a different company, I never got it right for her, I felt I had let her down.
In one week my mum had 13 different carers, the visits lasted 10-15 minutes, not the 45 minutes she needed or was paying for, they were rushed and no one had time to sit and chat with her, or to reassure her on bad days. No one took the time to get to know her or understand exactly what she needed or wanted.
I was at my wits end - I didn't think I was asking for much, all I wanted was for her to be cared for in the way I would have cared for her, to turn up for every visit and close to the times she wanted and to get to know her and brighten her day.
She passed away 2 years later, she was just 66 years old and that was my life changing moment.
I decided that I was going to do something to change the way home care is delivered
My mission was to provide the care I wish I could have found for my mum
