Follow in Mary's Footsteps

The Oldham office of national award winning care company, Home Instead, which provides care in the home for clients in Oldham and the surrounding areas, could have the most highly qualified caregiver working on their team, a Doctor of Philosophy.

Dr. Mary Murphy, 55, from Chadderton has a PhD in Social & Legal Studies and lectures in Research, Principles & Practice at Sheffield Hallam University.  After taking early retirement from the Local Authority in December 2009, where she worked on Strategy & Policy development, Mary decided that she wanted a more hands on role where she could make a real difference to people’s lives.

Worried that she may be over qualified, Mary applied to Home Instead and was successful in being offered a caregiver role, a job she simply loves.

Mary says “I get to see so many lovely people every day working as a caregiver and there is great job satisfaction from giving people the opportunity to remain in their own homes.  My clients have lead fulfilling and interesting lives and I enjoy talking to them about themselves and their history.”

Mary provides care for a couple aged 87 and 93 who were avid tennis players in their younger days.  They love to talk about sports and about Mary’s hobby, archery.

Mick Sheehan, owner of the Oldham office, commented “There is an increasing level of demand for quality care services in the area and when I received Mary’s application I was very impressed by her wealth of experience and academic achievements.  There was no way that I would let her slip through my fingers.  We employ people with many different backgrounds who come to Home Instead to make a difference and for those with no prior experience we provide a full training programme.”
