Good nutrition is important for everybody and this is particularly true for older people. Often older people living by themselves fall out of the habit of eating regular meals and consequently may be eating foods that are not nutritious. Sometimes it is simply difficult to shop and so sufficient food is not at home.
At Home Instead many of our clients have requested that we prepare fresh meals when we visit and to assist with shopping. When we are visiting regularly we can easily monitor eating habits and encourage the consumption of healthy options. Sitting with a client while eating makes more of a social occasion of a meal and promotes good eating habits. Our CAREGivers are happy to do shopping and encourage clients to accompany them.
A recent BBC report showed that there are increasing levels of malnutrition being reported by NHS trusts. Age UK has also expressed concern about the reported levels of malnutrition.
