At Home Instead Sheffield and Barnsley we are extremely proud of our care model which has underlying importance of preventing loneliness. Thus we were delighted that our Community Development Officer Kathy Markwick was present at the launch of The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness on Tuesday 31st January 2017. During her time as a Member of Parliament Jo Cox was dedicated to tackling the loneliness crisis in the UK. In January 2016 this led her to form an independent, cross-party Commission of organisations, campaigners and individuals.
After being recognised for her work behind setting up the successful SuperJam tea parties and the weekly Home Instead Friendship Lunches, Kathy was invited to the Houses of Parliament by Denise Bailey from the Campaign to End Loneliness.
Kathy said: ‘We had a fantastic day and it was lovely to meet Jo’s husband, sister and parents. The speeches were very emotional, but at the same time hugely inspiring. We all agreed that Jo would be extremely proud to know that a wonderful Mission on Loneliness had been created out of something so dreadful.
At Home Instead we hold Free Dementia Workshops, Free Dementia Friends’ Sessions, Superjam Tea Parties, Friendship Lunches and a Memory Cafe. Along with our WOW (What’s on Where) Guide, these are all undoubtedly excellent tools for us in our quest to combat/reduce loneliness and social isolation.’
Ruth Brown, from Home Instead’s National Office also attended the launch and highlighted our amazing work with the elderly and our mission: to change the face of ageing. As recent recipients of the Queen’s Award for Innovation in recognition of our companionship-based model we are focused on ensuring our clients never experience loneliness. We are making a difference to people’s lives through our bespoke relationship-led approach.
