Couples Working in Care - Bev and John
Bev and John met through their Youth Methodist Church 50 years ago, and have been married nearly 49 years. When thinking back to when they first met, on a trip to Derbyshire with the church, John describes it as Bev being 'in the coach with her friends on the way, and on the way back being in the car with me!'.
Bev was first interested in Home Instead after she saw an advert for CAREGivers, but unfortunately didn't go for it as she thought she needed to be able to drive. Meanwhile, John was newly retired - having been a driving instructor for 32 years - and felt he needed to fill his time with something different. Bev soon learnt it didn't matter that she didn't drive and subsequently joined John at Home Instead.
Describing the work as not only rewarding, but simply 'enjoyable', Bev and John have now been at Home Instead for 4 and a half years. They equally appreciate the challenges that their work faces them with; finding themselves 'doing things that they never thought possible'. John also strongly believes that his previous life skills have all built up to his role as a CAREGiver. As avid members of their Church and John's past driving instructing career, the couple feel that their life experiences have developed their patience and listening skills, John in particular saying he 'couldn't have done it 20 years ago'.
Overall, the couple have been more than well-suited for their roles here, not only providing support for their clients, but also clients' families and fellow CAREGivers - a support we are all so thankful for here at Home Instead.
