District Councillors Give Backing For Dementia Workshops

Home Instead has just received the backing of local District Councillors to provide free dementia workshops in the local community.

Owner of Home Instead, which provides home care for older people in Retford, Gainsborough and surrounding areas, Vicky Waring explains, “At Home Instead many of our clients are living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia and we understand that people may not always recognise the signs or may need support with what can sometimes be challenging behaviours. So we decided to share our knowledge and have taken our own City & Guilds accredited dementia training course which was created especially for our caregivers and developed a training workshop which we can share with our local community.”

Councillors, Alan Chambers, Susan Shaw and Jim Anderson are delighted to support the dementia training workshops. Councillor Jim Anderson commented, “We are so pleased to be able to support this initiative here in Bassetlaw which will make a huge difference to the lives of people living with dementia and of course the family and friends who care for them. It is good to note that The Well has also been supportive of this much needed social activity and we wish the group and business every success.”

Sue Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing added, “Bassetlaw District Council is committed to supporting the health and well-being of the residents of Bassetlaw and extending the professional knowledge and experience from Home Instead into the local community, will be beneficial to all who choose to access it.”

The workshops will teach people to identify the typical signs of dementia and gain a better understanding of the condition. It will also arm family carers and others in the community with effective techniques for managing the sometimes challenging behaviour associated with dementia. The aim at Home Instead is to reach out to everyone in the local community and to help make a dementia friendly society in our area.
