Glow Walk - Alzheimer's Research
Every year one of our CAREGivers Mandy Cattell tries to raise much needed money for charities close to her heart. Since becoming a CAREGiver for Home Instead Northampton Mandy decided to support Alzheimer's Research. Mandy quoted “This illness touches the hearts of so many people and their families”. With help from friends, family & work colleagues she organised a sponsored GLOW WALK around Abington Park. With the help of the lovely people in the attached photo and the generosity of everyone that sponsored them they raised approximately £900. Mandy would just like to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone involved.

Annually we support lots of charities that help the elderly and we decided it would be nice to support the youth in our community. We wish them well for 2020.

Silver Sunday / 8th Year Anniversary
On Sunday 13th October we held a gathering for our clients to celebrate Silver Sunday this also coincided with our 8th Year Anniversary. We would like to thank all the clients and their family members plus our staff who joined us in this celebration. You braved the wet and windy weather to meet and socialise with others. You participated in singing and some of you even had a little dance! We all enjoyed a lovely hot buffet and you helped demolish our scrumptious cake (A big “Thank You” to Homemade by Victoria, Northampton). We also held a raffle and raised £295 which will be donated to The Silver Line (a helpline for older people). Thank you to all of those that contributed.

STAND UP TO FALLS
A fall can be a huge set-back for an older person and potentially cause serious injury or death. Falls cost the NHS more than £1 billion a year and account for 4 million hospital bed days. A fall can often be the first step in decline for an older person, but it does not have to be this way. With proper guidance and support at home, older people can keep their independence and stay ‘falls free’. There are many ways to stand up to fall and here at HISC we offer FIVE KEY-WAYS to help prevent falls amongst older people. Should you require a full brochure for your perusal or to show a family member then don’t hesitate to contact the office on 01604 211190.

Tips to stay cool!
With the hot weather in mind Home Instead Northampton wanted to remind you of ways to keep your elderly loved one’s cooler during this time. Top tips to stay cool: • Avoid the sun during peak times between 11am & 3pm. • Keep hydrated – even if you’re not thirsty it’s important to drink plenty of water or fruit juice, try to avoid caffeine and alcohol as this increase’s dehydration. • Choose clothing, which is light in colour, lightweight and of loose fitting. • Wear a hat whilst out in the sun • Take cool showers and baths when possible. If you’re out and about, use a cotton hankie soaked in cool water and place it on the back of your neck and on your wrists. Run your wrists under a cold tap too. • Choose the coolest areas of your home, keeping curtains and blinds closed to prevent sun heating up rooms, especially your bedroom. If you have elderly neighbours check please check on them and make sure they are ok. Our CAREGivers also need to make sure they are well hydrated whilst providing home care in Northampton too!

PAULA - CareGiver & Community Responder
I fell into care quite by accident. A friend of mine wasn’t happy with the care she was receiving, and it was her daughter who approached me to support her & I loved it! After about 2-years I decided to take a leap into Domiciliary care, and I loved it even more. I loved everything about it, especially my clients. I came to Home Instead in January 2019 and I haven’t looked back. I have a fantastic client base whom are all local to me. In my spare time I volunteer for South Northants Community Responders (SNCR). We work alongside East Midlands Ambulance Service attending calls, anything from welfare checks to cardiac arrests. Often, we are the first on scene, because we are already in the area, especially in the case of more rural areas, where we can start life-saving skills. SNCR is a Registered Charity, we are ‘Local People, saving Local Lives.’ All our kits are paid for by the scheme, from funds we have raised ourselves. Recently I became part the Events and Fundraising team. I feel very honoured to be part of this team which gives me the chance to do more for the scheme. As a Registered Charity we raise funds for our kits. Each kit cost approximately £2000 with the defibrillator costing £1000. As the scheme has now double in size with new responders joining the scheme, funds for their new kits is our top priority. Home Instead have been so supportive of my volunteer work and have even donated prizes for our Summer Raffle this year. For that I am humbly grateful, because ‘to us, it’s personal.’

Recently, one of our clients was diagnosed with MND so all of her team came in to hear Scott’s presentation. Our clients Daughter Karin was also present. This was of huge benefit to all involved, where we will remain in touch with Scott throughout this journey. Thank you to Scott for giving up his valuable time. Age UK Venton Centre – Bake Off Donation
On 29th May 2019 Home Instead office team members Kelly Mennim and Lisa Goody visited the Venton Centre in Northampton, also present were CAREGiver’s Jade and Corrina who supported the Bake-Off event. Our team met with clients who use the services of the day centre and also the wonderful staff who work at the Venton Centre. Attending the centre were some of our own clients who seemed to be enjoying themselves! This is the second donation Home Instead have made to the Day Centre, where we remain in touch with the Care Manager Vicky Denney and her team, working together to support clients who use both Home Instead and the services of Age UK to tackle loneliness and provide a safe and fun environment. On this occasion, Staff & Caregiver’s from Home Instead raised £200 by holding a Bake Off in the office, where baked cakes were sold in a raffle, clients were also invited to the event. This donation will go towards a day trip for the clients who access the Day Centre regularly. The Venton Centre is a purpose-built unit for day care and takes clients in from Northamptonshire. The Centre Manager and her team run a wide range of activities and events, ensuring that their clients get the best out of their day. Clients participate in seated exercise classes and arts and crafts. On site there is also a Hairdresser, Toenail cutting service and facilities for a bath or a shower. If you are interested in attending the Venton Centre please call Vicky Denney, Centre Manager on 01604 604500 where you can arrange to go along and have a taster day before you commit.

In-house Dementia Training
Statistics from the Alzheimer's Society show that there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over a million by 2025. This will soar to two million by 2051. Home Instead Northampton run internal courses for all their CAREGivers to give them a better understanding how to help and support their clients, who are living with this disease. This programme talks not only about what dementia is but also the background of how it was discovered and named. Our training programme is providing our CAREGivers with the necessary tools and knowledge to get a great in-site and think ‘outside’ the box when client displays certain behaviours. The training also has some great activities for CAREGivers to participate in and to experience briefly how someone living with dementia feels and the impact it may have on them and their families around them. Our courses are on-going and are run in blocks of 3-hours over a 3-week period. Our Dementia training is City and Guilds accredited meaning it is a recognised Certificate. We also offer a shorter version of the course that is more suitable for family members who are supporting a loved one. The course offers practical solutions and diversions to difficult moments when supporting with Alzheimer’s. If you need any help or advice or would like to register your interest in our training programme, then please contact our office on 01604 211190 where someone will be at hand to help.

Deaf Awareness Week 6th – 12th May
Deaf Awareness Week aims to promote the positive aspects of deafness, promote social inclusion and raise awareness of the huge range of local organisations that support deaf people and their family and friends. If your hearing isn't what it used to be, you are not alone! One in six people in the UK has hearing loss or is deaf, and more and more people are getting the help they need to hear better. Hearing loss usually happens gradually, so you may not notice it at first. If you're losing your hearing and struggling to communicate, you may find that your quality of life is affected? Hearing aids and other forms of management can help you to regain your confidence New evidence highlights that hearing loss increases the risk or impact of various other long-term conditions. At the same time, because many health conditions are associated with ageing, they are likely to occur alongside hearing loss. Research shows that hearing loss doubles the risk of developing depression and increases the risk of anxiety and other mental health issues - although hearing aids reduce these risks. There's also increasing evidence to show a strong link between hearing loss and dementia. With mild hearing loss, the risk of developing dementia doubles, with moderate hearing loss the risk is three times as much, while with severe hearing loss the risk is five times. Research has shown a link between any type of diabetes and hearing loss. There's also evidence that hearing loss is linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke and obesity. If you think you may have hearing loss, make an appointment with your GP as this can be the first steps to getting a diagnosis and the help you need to manage your condition. They will be also be able to tell you what is involved at every step of making your hearing better.

GET ACTIVE THIS SPRING!
The warming temperatures across the country are a call to get back outside and enjoy the fresh air. Getting outside to move is also a great way to infuse a stale winter exercise routine with new life. Seniors who stay physically active often feel and look better than those who lead sedentary lifestyles. Exercise helps prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. If your loved one has any of these medical conditions, he or she may have limited mobility and require assistance with daily tasks. Physical activity has also been shown to reduce the pain of arthritis. Whatever exercise regimen your loved one adopts, the program should offer a combination of cardio, flexibility, and strength and balance training. For seniors who want to embrace physical activities such as gardening, walking or swimming this Spring, always do exercise with another adult present. If you have a lifeline then make sure you always wear it! Exercise is a great way to stimulate the mind & get your day off to a good start ……. Go on, what are you waiting for?
