As ageing and dementia make social life harder, people can feel increasingly disconnected and alone. At Home Instead Basingstoke, we aim to help clients feel part of the community again, with elderly home care which can include outings, local walks, companionship and mental stimulation. Peter, a 90-year-old from Upton Grey, near Odiham, lived alone and enjoyed his independence. However, with weakening legs and losing access to his car, he became frustrated by the limitations on his mobility. Although initially resistant to the idea of carers, he accepted our offer of assistance with shopping and outings to the pub. As trust grew, Peter welcomed help with meals and eventually with his personal care. His family was astonished, but delighted.
Great care begins with great people. We recruit carers who are naturally empathetic and align with our values, then equip them with in-depth dementia training. This personal, supportive approach is matched by the rich history of Odiham itself. The historic village, south of Hook, is famous as the first entry in the Hampshire Domesday Book. Located midway between Winchester and Windsor, it became a stopping off point for Norman kings, which possibly caused King John to build Odiham Castle in the early 1200s. The French besieged the castle for two weeks in 1216, as part of the First Barons' War. Odiham is also home to a historic Pest House, once used to confine people with serious infectious diseases.
