From Fisherman to friend

Dave was your quintessential Lincolnshire lad, joining the fishing industry at the age of 15 like many of his friends at the time. However, on the collapse of the fishing industry Dave began a job in a factory, working his way up to becoming a fitters mate in a local oil refinery.

Dave had always wanted to go into caring as a profession, but, quite understandably, put the responsibilities of his young family first. Once they had all grown up he made the bold decision to change his lifestyle and move the 200 plus miles to Havant where a few of his friends lived. Although he had no previous professional caring experience, Dave had looked after elderly relatives and friends for a number of years with varying conditions and illnesses and then took a chance and applied to be an end of life carer. Dave began his caring career with Home Instead in Havant in December 2015 and has never looked back.

‘I get to go to work everyday knowing that I can make a difference to someones life that day, I currently care for a gentleman with the aim to make him feel comfortable, supported and listened to. There is so much energy in his home, family and friends visit often and I am grateful to be part of their joyful final hours together.

The things I find most rewarding about my new role is job satisfaction, seeing a clients smiling face when I arrive and knowing I am able to help in their continuity and independence but the hardest challenge is gaining a clients confidence due to their vulnerability, once we get to know each other that is thankfully all forgotten.

I chose to work with Home Instead as I was made to feel comfortable right from the start, I was new to the area and the team were completely professional with the added bonus of a great sense of humour. They are easy to approach when I have a suggestion or concern as I build my knowledge and understanding of caring with the team there too. I would say to anyone wishing to change their career to caring is to take a chance like I did as I have never been happier and more fulfilled in my job role.’

What the client said:

“I could not have wished for better care which was given to my husband. The staff were fantastic and did the job with pride and care. I only wished I had them from the very beginning. I really cannot praise them and thank them enough.”
