Home Instead Bromley supports LGBT+ Clients

Staff from four Home Instead offices including Bromley recently attended the ‘LGBT+ Awareness Training for Domiciliary Staff and Care Home Staff’ run by Opening Doors London. The objective of the course is built to increase confidence for staff and carers in the care industry in supporting older LGBT+ people to discuss their important relationships as well as become more familiar with the terminologies used when discussing LGBT+ subjects. It is an essential tool for staff considering that for many of our clients in their youth, being ‘gay’ was a criminal offence and therefore may well have had a detrimental effect on their mental health and wellbeing. They may never had had the opportunity to discuss their sexuality before either with healthcare professionals or even with those closest to them. Home Instead prides itself on providing individualised care so we can personally address each client’s wellbeing, build a trust base so they are comfortable and feel safe about speaking openly. This can often be difficult for older generations. Karina Brown, Managing Director at Home Instead Senior Care Bromley, Chislehurst and Orpington said, “We are proud to progress the individualised care we can offer to our clients. Our primary aim is that our clients feel comfortable in their own setting and this means that they should be able to express themselves openly in safe environment.” Karina is currently reviewing her organisation’s client consultation process and will be providing enhanced LGBT+ training to all staff, working towards gaining the ‘Pride in Care Standard’ accreditation. If you would like to learn more about the services of Home Instead, please contact the team on 020 8022 5220 or go to our website https://www.homeinstead.co.uk/bromley-chislehurst-orpington/contact-us
