What are the top qualities of a CAREGiver?

Are you considering a career in home care? 

If you want to pursue an opportunity to really make a difference to the lives of elderly people who wish to stay at home, then becoming a CAREGiver for Home Instead might be the career move for you.

When we take on a CAREGiver we don’t mind too much if you don’t have years of experience, or whether or not you have qualifications in health and social care.  If you do have these then that’s an absolute bonus but in fact, what we are really looking for are the qualities you have as an individual.


So, do you consider yourself to have the following?

Patience

Providing care is not always easy, and sometimes it doesn’t always go to plan. There may be initial hesitation from the client, it might take much longer to do a task than planned.  The most important thing for a CAREGiver to do in these situations is to remain calm and patient.

Kindness

If you’re even considering a career in care, then you’ll most likely have the above in abundance.  Even just a small act of kindness can go a long way with a client, leaving them with a smile for the rest of the day.

Empathy

How would you like to be treated if you were the client?  We treat all clients with the respect and dignity that we would expect ourselves.  Just being able to see the world from the client’s perspective allows us to provide the absolute best service for them as an individual.

Attentiveness

At Home Instead all our care packages are bespoke - tailored to each individual client, but of course, over time, their requirements can change.  It’s important to listen to the needs of your client and observe any changes in routine or behaviour so any appropriate action can be taken.

Integrity

Our CAREGivers always want to do the right thing – even if that means it’s not the easy solution.   Being trustworthy and honest are two of the most important traits that a CAREGiver can have.  We also make sure that all our calls are a minimum of 1 hr – this allows you to build up that relationship with your client.

Reliability

Our clients depend on the help they have at home and may get anxious if someone is late or doesn’t show up when expected.  A dependable CAREGiver arrives on time to their client and will pride themselves on providing the highest standards of care at all times.
