Visitors of Memory Café 'Love To Move'.

Visitors to our regular Memory Lane Café, held twice a month at St. Giles’ Church in Wrexham have been introduced to a pioneering new exercise programme, Love To Move, specially designed by experts to get older people moving and functioning better.

Home Instead Wrexham and Flintshire East are the first franchise in Wales to introduce Love To Move to their growing list of activities within the community, aiming to improve the lives of local residents who are living with Dementia.

Love To Move is a chair-based exercise programme, developed by the British Gymnastics Foundation.  Over the last five years, the British Gymnastics Foundation have been working with experts in Japan who found that this type of programme had numerous benefits to people living with dementia.  In fact, the research programme was so successful in Japan that Love To Move is now completely state-funded and takes place in every care home across the country.

Benefits of Love To Move include:

  • Significant improvement in walking speed
  • Reduction in depression
  • Improvement of balance
  • Improvement in ability to undertake activities for daily living

Many participants have discovered that Love To Move has increased movement in their hands, allowing them to feed themselves, do crafts, play bingo and partake in other social activities.

Melanie from Home Instead Wrexham and Flintshire East who is leading Love To Move at the Memory Lane Café said:  “Exercise is important for the wellbeing of our community so it was important to be able to provide a programme that is truly accessible to all ages, especially those who are living with dementia.”

Speaking about how it will affect those in the local community, Melanie continued, “Our visitors to the Memory Lane café really enjoyed the first Love To Move session, it’s a great way to socialise whilst reaping the health benefits.  We hope that as the programme develops, we will see some amazing transformations.”

Love To Move will be a regular activity at the Memory Lane Café at St. Giles’ Church, Wrexham which takes place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.
