Happy Birthday to our oldest client!
As the nation celebrates NHS fundraising champion, Captain Tom Moore’s 100th birthday this week, local school children in Wrexham have been helping to pay tribute to our very own centenarian, though she has a few extra years on Captain Tom!
Home Instead client, Gerty (who is pictured with our Care Manager Myfanwy at her last birthday) turned 108 this month and whilst face-to-face celebrations have been put on hold, she did receive some lovely cards to help her celebrate at a safe distance.
Pupils at Ysgol Penycae (including Myfanwy’s son and his friends in Year 6) heard that Gerty would be celebrating a milestone birthday in lockdown, so they decided to design their own cards which they could send to put a smile on her face during these difficult times.
She was absolutely delighted to receive the birthday cards from the children, which have now taken pride of place alongside her annual card from the Queen.
Gerty was born and bred in the Wrexham area where she has worked in farming for most of her life. At 108, she was born in the same month that the Titanic sank, has lived through two World Wars and seen women getting the vote. Now living in the midst of a global pandemic, Gerty truly has seen it all!
She now lives at home with her daughter Sheila and son-in-law Brian, where she has a great bond with her Home Instead CAREGivers.
On behalf of her mother, Sheila commented: “We’ve been reading all the nice messages for Gerty and she is absolutely delighted that the children have taken the time to send her these beautiful cards. These are very strange times, but we are so grateful to know that people are thinking about us, and we can’t wait until we can celebrate in person with our loved ones again.”
