VAT Relief For Disabled or Those With A Long-term Illness

For some older people, the only way to remain living independently in their own home is with the help and support of care services, as well as the use of adaptive products.

Home Instead Conwy and Denbighshire can proudly offer personal care, home help and companionship services across Conwy and Denbighshire.

With regards to the adaptive products required, many are unaware that they could be entitled to a tax relief, saving 20% of the purchase price.

To be eligible for the VAT relief you will have:

-         Arthritis

-         Loss of sight

-         Cardiovascular Disease

-         Deafness

-         Diabetes

-         Epilepsy

-         Heart Disease

-         Hypertension

-         Kidney Disease

-         Motor Neuron Disease

-         Multiple Sclerosis

-         Parkinson’s Disease

-         Physically Disabled

-         Terminal illness

Being registered as disabled is not required, nor do you need a doctor’s letter as proof. This said, you will not receive this if you are only temporarily disabled, for example due to an injury such as a broken leg.

As the relief is not means-tested, there is no need to provide or share any personal information.

The relief is only for personal use and cannot be used for goods that are available to a group of people to use such as a stair lift in a charity building, or for hospital or nursing home use.

It is up to the retailer supplying the product to avoid charging VAT on the goods/service and is not something HMRC deals with after the transaction.

It is up to the supplier to ensure conditions are met, but you may need to sign a declaration. This will include details such as the type of disability, your name and address.

The relief is available on various goods which include adaptation goods, adapted motor vehicles, installation of the goods, emergency alarm call systems, and adaptive building work, for example widening hallways.

Adaptations can really make a difference to someone and improve their quality of life. Unfortunately, money can also be quite tight which is why we want to make people aware that there are ways to help.
