Loneliness and isolation is an issue many seniors face, but this doesn’t have to be the case.
Home Instead are passionate about making sure older people can remain independent for as long as possible, whilst still living a quality standard of life.
Our companionship services are important for our clients’ wellbeing, since mental health is just as important as physical health. They allow proper relationships to be formed with regular CAREGivers that are specifically matched.
With a minimum call time of 1 hour, our CAREGivers have the time to build these relationships with clients and stimulates a genuine desire to positively influence someone’s life.
This is extremely evident with one client in particular, who receives our companionship service to combat anxiety, boredom and loneliness.
Our CAREGivers have been spending a lot of time out of work hours to come up with some ideas of activities that they believe would benefit their client.
Ideas included a combination of art and crafts to ensure they weren’t stuck doing the same thing on every visit.
One of the CAREGivers told us:
‘We're working on what is called a 'bullet point journal' which has a combination of writing about memories, feelings, drawing and colouring. It's been proven to help with issues such as anxiety and depression so we do a different activity every day.’
The client has been responding well with the activities and the CAREGiver has commented on how much she seems to enjoy it, with significant changes noticed in just under a month.
‘She is a lot more focused, calm and willing to join in’, the CAREGiver also commented that ‘… if she loses interest in one page, we can jump to a completely different one.’
Activities have included making decorations from cardboard tubes, jigsaws, painting, baking and puzzles.
A particular favourite, that engaged both CAREGiver and client, involved creating some standing swallows which were made from card.
‘I’ve never seen her so focused on anything before and she loved the end result.’
‘She has never verbally told me she’s enjoyed making anything until we made the birds. She made quite a few with me until we made a perfect pair which now resides on her bookshelf.’
Our CAREGiver found that this particular client feels the need to keep busy, but seemed to have lost interest in most things. Through these activities and the relationship that formed, keeping occupied soon became very easy.
It’s stories like this that make us proud about what we do, knowing that our team have truly made a difference to someone’s life.
