Dementia Action Week is the Alzheimer’s Society annual campaign to help raise awareness. Throughout this week, everyone across the UK will take actions to make everyday life better for people living with Dementia. Whether it’s big or small, every action counts.
Here at Home Instead, we have committed to complete our own actions during this awareness week.
Our Community Relations Manager, Lucie Williams, has been visiting those local to Abergele to deliver numerous Dementia Friends sessions. We have a couple of staff members who are Dementia Champions, enabling them to deliver the information sessions and create more dementia friends.
As one of our pledges to become ‘Working to Become Dementia Friendly’ was to have all our team Dementia Friends, they have all been wearing their badges in the office throughout the week to promote awareness and spark conversation.
If you would like to book on to one of the public sessions or arrange one for a group you’re a part of, please get in touch: 01745 772150.
Kinmel Bay Memory Café
Every month we hold a Memory Café in the Kinmel Bay Community Library. The group is open to anyone, including those affected by memory problems and their carers.
As part of the Home Instead national office campaign ‘Songs to Remember’, we took the opportunity to create a new game for those that attend the Memory Café to enjoy.
Game cards were made from the various iconic TV theme tunes that were selected. The idea of the game was to identify and match the TV programme to the theme tune, either by the picture of the title scene or the written name. For those who enjoyed more of a challenge we also had blank sheets where they could guess the tune without any other prompt.
This was thoroughly enjoyed by the group and encouraged conversation through reminiscence.
These monthly meetings take place on the last Monday of the month, 2pm until 4pm. No need to pre-book, simply turn up on the day. Group members have full control over the activities that they engage in, from the likes of guest speakers to playing games.
Everyone is welcome and we’re always open for new people to join in.

All the proceeds of this event go to the Alzheimer’s Society to continue the great work they do for those with dementia.
This year the Memory Walk will take place on Sunday September 9th 2018 at 1.30pm, with registration starting at the Llandudno Lifeboat Station from 12.30pm.
