Local caregiver Tom Clancy has reached the final stages of the Real People of Wales Awards organised by Real Radio and has been included in the final 4 nominees for the Carer of the Year category.
Tom (67) joined Home Instead Senior Care in June 2010 to fulfil his desire for helping people. As a committed caregiver, he has been described as passionate, dedicated and a real gentleman.
Home Instead owner Philip Batchelor commented: “We couldn’t be happier that Tom has reached the final stage of this competition as he is so deserving of this recognition. Even during a recent snowy winter, Tom never missed a care call and even spent his time with a client over New Years Eve so that they would not be alone.”
Having recently received the all clear after receiving cancer treatment, Tom continues to remain focused on his career which helps to improve the lives of others. He commented: “Caring is enjoyable and enriching. After I retired, I began caring for a friend and found it so rewarding that I decided it was something I wanted to do long-term. I have built some fantastic relationships with some truly incredible people over the years and I always look forward to catching up with my clients and find it so rewarding to be able to help them to live their lives independently and with the utmost dignity.”
With a variety of hobbies outside of his working life, Tom does not hesitate to include his clients in his personal life. Having recently started attending a lip reading class, he invited one of his clients along to join him. Tom said: “Although this gentleman will be 90 in August, he thoroughly enjoys the lessons and is appreciated and well-liked by the rest of the class.”
If you would like Tom to win Carer of the Year, cast your vote on the Real Radio website before the 3rd July. The winners will be announced at a star-studded event at the Vale Hotel in Hensol on July 14th. The other awards will recognise Child of Courage, Teacher of the Year, Mum and Dad of the Year and Community Hero of the Year with all proceeds going to the cancer charity Tenovus.
