Dementia Action Week
Dementia is very common. Every day almost 600 people in the UK develops dementia. (Alzheimers Research UK).
Dementia Action Week 17-23 may 2021, is all about raising awareness of those living with dementia.
We, at Home Instead Epping Forest, are members of the Epping Forest Dementia Action Alliance whose aim is to help those living with dementia in the Epping Forest area, their carers, companions and families with access to the services they need and help them fully participate in community life. All members were asked to do something during this week. So as part of Dementia Action week, we offered to run a Dementia Friendly Virtual Café.
We had this yesterday afternoon. It was a really fun hour.
We did a short quiz on the month of May from well known May flowers to events that happen in May – Maypole Dancing and VE Day. Our session on complete the saying caused a lot of discussion. There was music and singing in the form of ‘Guess This Tune’ and also a general sing- a - long at the end of the session. My cousin sent me a video of her singing some wartime favourites to include.
We had great participation – Jim knew most of the quiz questions and Keith showed us his knowledge of the lyrics to some of our songs. Some did some dancing and all enjoyed singing, it was super.
Kevin, one of our CAREGivers played his guitar and Claire from the office team sang, it was uplifting.
Thank you to everyone for taking part.
We do hope that very soon we will be able to run these events in real time as opposed to virtually using ZOOM!
