How older people really view old age

Home Instead has recently surveyed over 2,000 older people aged over 65 to discover their thoughts and views on ageing. We had an incredibly positive response that shows older age is not something to be feared, but a time of life to look forward to and enjoy.

We learned that 77 is when older people believe the golden years begin and that they think the best thing about old age is having more free time. Also, over half of over-65s say that spending time with family and friends is one of the best things about growing older.

We also asked about fashion in later years and nearly half (48%) of over-65s we surveyed said that one of the best things about getting older is wearing clothes for comfort, instead of style. Almost a third (31%) of over-65s we surveyed said that a positive thing about getting older is being able to speak your mind.

‘You’re only as old as you feel’ – that’s a belief held by nearly nine in ten of the over-65s we surveyed.

Liz Brackley, Director of Home Instead Brighton, Hove and Shoreham, shares her thoughts on the survey results: ‘We are delighted to hear such an upbeat perspective is held by so many of the older people in our society. Here at Home Instead we wholeheartedly support the idea that old age is what you make it and we do all we can to support the older people we work with to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible, and to enjoy their later years exactly how they want to.’
