With two-thirds of our clients having some form of dementia, it is important that our CAREGivers have appropriate training in recognising the symptoms and understanding how to deal with them. As it was National Dementia Awareness week in May 2012, we invited Peter Ruickbie from the Leeds office of the Alzheimer’s Society to address some of our team of CAREGivers.

Mr Ruickbie gave an informative and in-depth insight into dementia and its different forms and gave practical advice on supporting and stimulating those affected. The CAREGivers found the well-informed guidance extremely helpful and felt that it put a lot of ideas into perspective. As one of them said ‘Mr Ruickbie was easy to listen to, knew what he was talking about and was very passionate about his subject’.

There are 700,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2025. The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.
