Local healthcare specialist, Margaret Brennan, has set up a new Wetherby-based business providing care for elderly people in their own homes called Home Instead.

Margaret, who is a trained nurse with over 24 years’ experience specialising in cancer and palliative care, worked in healthcare until 2005 when she was Head of Cancer Nursing at Harrogate General Hospital.

At this time her father had become unwell and her work in the healthcare sector did not give her the flexibility she needed to assist with his care. Her solution was to take a break from healthcare and she set up a pottery painting shop, Pots 2 Go, in Harrogate. The pottery business gave Margaret what, at the time, was much needed ‘head space’ and allowed her to spend time with her parents.

During her father’s illness Margaret experienced the good and the bad sides of care and it was this that led her to set up a business in the care sector. Following her father’s death last year, she sold the pottery painting shop with a view to setting up a business which would allow her to apply her expertise and knowledge in the nursing profession to the home care sector.

Commenting she said, “It’s quite simple, I want to make a difference. When my father was ill it was his wish, mine and my mother’s, that he should stay at home for as long as possible. Having experienced this first hand I can understand how important this is for everyone involved.”

On hearing about the opportunity to set up a care company specialising in care of the elderly with Home Instead, Margaret jumped at the chance to be involved. From her base at Walkers Court, Audby Lane, Margaret and her team will provide care for people in and around Wetherby and across North Leeds, from Tadcaster to Otley.

Margaret’s new Wetherby based business is part of a national network of approaching one hundred Home Instead offices. Services include personal care such as assistance with bathing, dressing, eating and medications; home help covering all aspects of day-to-day housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties plus companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients to appointments through to simple conversation and good company.
