Sam Brocklebank presents Linda with her award certificate
Local Wetherby lady, Linda Rawson, has been named the North East finalist in the national Caregiver of the Year awards which are run by her employer, Home Instead. Linda was nominated for the award by Margaret Brennan, owner of the Wetherby and North Leeds office of at-home care company Home Instead.
Home Instead has 138 offices in the UK employing in the region of 6,500 caregivers. Five regional finalists were selected from this group and Margaret and Linda were both delighted to learn that Linda’s caring nature was to be rewarded as the North East finalist.
Commenting on Linda’s award, Margaret said, “Linda is a retired nurse and brings a lifetime of caring skills to her work. “In nominating Linda for this award I mentioned a few instances where she has really gone beyond the call of duty and displayed her empathetic nature. One of her clients was admitted to St Gemma’s Hospice but asked to go home to die. On hearing this Linda cancelled a week’s leave in order to be with her client and she was able to care for the client for eight days until her death. “During this time Linda spent considerable time ‘just being’ with the client, not only attending to her personal care, but the fundamental little things that make a difference when someone is near the end of their life. This ranged from bringing in some lip balm for the clients dry lips, to providing a comforting shoulder for her adult grandchildren, to discovering and playing the client’s favourite hymn on her iPad. It was Linda’s 60th birthday during this time and the client made sure a family member bought her a beautiful hydrangea, which Linda has planted in her garden.
“Linda was on duty when the client died, with both Linda and her family by her bedside. It was a peaceful death with the client’s favourite hymn playing in the background, thanks to Linda. The family have expressed their immense gratitude to us as an organisation, and in particular to Linda for her compassion, humility, strength and presence. “This is but one example of what makes Linda a stand out caregiver and we are all really proud of her.”
Home Instead received a letter from this client’s stepdaughter thanking them for everything they did and with these particular comments, “Linda came to help our stepmother, Margaret, from the early days of her needing care until the very end. She quickly established a close, but professional relationship with us all. She was attuned to Margaret from the outset, matching her sense of humour and looking after her to a high standard at all times. She certainly went above and beyond her duties, and we, as a family, were glad to have her company during Margaret’s final hours. We all appreciated her skills, her kindness and her empathy.”
