What is Dementia Friends? It's the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia run by the Alzheimer’s society. The main goal is tackling people's perception of dementia. When you join this initiative you can either become a Dementia Friend or a Dementia Friends
A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. Whether you attend a face-to-face Dementia Friends Information Session or watch their online video, Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about Dementia Friends to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.
A Dementia Friends Champion is a volunteer who encourages others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community. They do this by giving them information about the personal impact of dementia, and what they can do to help.
Peter and Alexis (Co-Directors of home Instead Watford) are both Dementia Friends Champions. Together they have created over 1,600 dementia friends with Peter creating over 1000 in 3 years and Alexis 600 in 3 months. Dementia champions are set a target to create 100 dementia friends a year. They have worked tirelessly to exceed this target. They have done this by running information sessions in schools, community centres, faith groups and businesses.
Peter and Alexis are ready for some big projects in 2019 hosting events throughout the year at Watford council (including the Mayor Peter Taylor), West Herts college, Everyone active and more! They are both passionate about creating a dementia friendly community in Watford and hope their work will contribute significantly to making this happen.
If you want to become a Dementia Friend you can attend a face-to-face session or watch the online video on the Dementia Friends website. Alternatively you can contact us at Home Instead and we would be very happy to arrange a bespoke session for your support group or organisation.
