Alf is a fabulous man, full of fun and with a great sense of humour. He is a retired Fire Fighter and as a gesture of their appreciation of his dedication throughout his career, the Fire Service have provided him with a TGA Breeze mobility scooter, which has really helped to give him his freedom back.
Another area where Alf really appreciates support is from the help of a regular Home Instead Carer. Alf is Pat’s main carer and although he is 83 years old and suffers with arthritis, he does all of the cooking, shopping, general running of the household as well as providing full time care and support to Pat, who suffers with dementia and sometimes gets frustrated when she is unable to do the jobs and tasks she always used to.
Alf really appreciates the help that the Care Giver provides, her personality is exactly right for his and Pat’s needs and she is sensitive to Pat’s feelings and situation. This is really important to Alf as it allows him to get on with all of the many things he needs to do as well as pursuing his other interests. Knowing that someone is there is a great help to Alf and gives him peace of mind.
The pride and joy of Alf and Pat’s lives are their two dogs, Lady and Sammy; both of whom are rescue dogs. Lady is a silver Lurcher and Sammy is a silver grey Bedlington Terrier. Pat used to really enjoy taking the dogs for long walks and now enjoys unconditional love and attention from them.
Alf has recently reached celebrity status locally due to his adapted scooter, complete with siren, horn and trusty helmet. Alf can be seen zooming around irrespective of the weather. Here at Home Instead, we are really proud of the support we are able to provide to Alf and Pat and we are aware that there are many other couples who would also benefit from this type of help and support.
