The Annual John Thomson award, dedicated to Melissa’s Dad is in recognition of CAREGivers who have given outstanding care over this past twelve months, took place on the 5th December 2013. Although we are proud of all our CAREGivers, this award is for two individuals who have repeatedly and consistently demonstrated care, compassion and kindness to their clients by going the extra mile, Janice Spiers won this years award.

The second element we are calling the "resilience" award and is being awarded to a CAREGiver who has demonstrated consistent care and displayed a professional attitude and treated clients with dignity and respect in the face of challenging behaviour. Pauline Deutschmann was the winner of this award.

The presentation event took place at the Home Instead Senior Care National Office and was enjoyed by a diverse range of partners, friends and family members and we were delighted that two clients were able to attend, because after all that is why we are all here. The partners who had been invited were all selected for their commitment to seeing the lives of older people transformed by good quality care and innovative and creative ways of providing help and support.

The two award winners received a glass disc commemorating the occasion and we truly hope this will be the first of many such events.

The award has been dedicated to Melissa's Dad, Dr John Thomson who has been an inspiration throughout her life as a Father, GP and an A&E Consultant; Dr Thomson presented the awards to Janice and Pauline and regaled those present with stories of his working life and he reinforced his shared belief in the values and ethos of Home Instead. Putting the client and in his case patient at the heart of care and treating them with dignity and respect and committing to caring for them.

Given that we live in a world requiring vast amounts of paperwork to be completed and health and safety practices can sometimes limit what we are able to do, it was so wondertul to be able to honour and celebrate really good things such as people who have shown exceptional qualities in reaching out to the clients we serve. The event was an inspiration and was very special.
