On Friday 12th October 2012 Anthea Pilkington and Irene Hough, owners of Home Instead in Southport accompanied on of their CAREGivers, Mr Peter Dooley to the Great British Care Awards North West regional finals at Blackpool Tower.  The evening was hosted by David Neilson and Julie Hesmondhalgh who play Roy and Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street and was a celebration of the great work that workers in the social care sector carry out.

Peter was a finalist in the Home Care Worker award; he had been shortlisted from 100’s of nominations and was one of six regional finalists.  The award recognises the significant role of the Home Care Worker in consistently providing a high quality standard, for people living in their own homes. Evidence of dedication, awareness of colleagues and career development were important elements for the judges as were the following:

  • Provide an excellent service to clients
  • Understand and demonstrate treating each person as an individual by giving a personalised service
  • Help people to be more independent wherever possible
  • Respects people’s right to privacy
  • Involve clients and their relatives/carers in the development of their care
  • Evidence of putting in extra effort for clients – ‘going the extra mile’
  • Aware of personal development, and looks for opportunities to absorb knowledge and skills. For example: training courses of all types, reading guidance and good practice guides, using toolkits, shadowing, attending workshops and study days, using e-learning.
  • Uses initiative
  • Adaptability, alertness and responsiveness to the people they care for.

Peter was pipped to the post by another nominee but to be a finalist was in itself a fantastic achievement and everyone at Home Instead is immensely proud of Peter for this and the ongoing work he does with older people across the Southport area, he is a true inspiration.
