Local at-home care company, Home Instead is bringing a heart warming new initiative to Southport this Christmas. which will see gifts distributed amongst older people in our community. The aim of gift-giving scheme, ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’, is to ensure that elderly people, who might not otherwise receive a gift this Christmas, receive one this year.

The way it works is simple. Home Instead will be at The Marble Place Shopping Centre, Chapel Street, Southport, Monday 3rd to Sunday 16th December, from 11am to 4pm. They will have a ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ Christmas tree on display which will be decorated with gift tags showing details of gift ideas. Members of the public will be invited to collect a tag from the tree, they can then go and buy the gift before returning it to the stand where they will be wrapped and placed under the tree for distribution.

The team at Home Instead is already busy working with a number of voluntary and charitable organisations such as the Sefton Pensioners Advocacy Centre, who will help to identify people in the local area who would benefit from this scheme. These organisations will also help with the distribution of the gifts at Christmas, which is the really fun bit!

Speaking about ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’, co-owner of Home Instead in Southport, Anthea Pilkington said, “We are really excited about the launch of this scheme and are delighted that we have been able to secure a place at the shopping centre. This will mean that we will be able to meet so many people who hopefully will help us to provide gifts to people who really need them.

“We provide care to older people in their own homes. These people are assured of regular company from their caregivers but we are hoping that ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ will allow us to reach out to the many older people who may not receive gifts this Christmas and who would really appreciate knowing that local people are thinking about them.”

‘Be a Santa to a Senior’, was launched in the United States in 2006 and, to date, has helped provide 1.2 million gifts to more than 700,000 older people.
