Local at-home care company, Home Instead recently launched a heart warming new initiative in Southport. which will see gifts distributed amongst older people in our community. The aim of gift-giving scheme, ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’, is to ensure that elderly people, who might not otherwise receive a gift this Christmas, receive one this year.

Home Instead had their ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ Christmas tree on display in Marble Place Shopping Centre in Southport which was decorated with gift tags showing details of gift ideas. Members of the public were invited to collect a tag from the tree, then go and buy the gift before returning it to the stand where their gift was wrapped and placed under the tree for distribution.

The team at Home Instead worked with a number of voluntary and charitable organisations such as the Sefton Pensioners Advocacy Centre, The Alzheimer’s Society, Riverside Housing and Peveril Housing to name but a few in order to identify people in the local area who would benefit from this scheme. These organisations will also help with the distribution of the gifts at Christmas, which is the really fun bit!

Speaking about ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’, co-owner of Home Instead in Southport, Anthea Pilkington said, “We are really excited to have brought this scheme to Southport and we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community and the local retailers in Southport. This will mean that we will be able to provide gifts to people who really need them.

“We provide care to older people in their own homes. These people are assured of regular company from their caregivers but we are hoping that ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ will allow us to reach out to the many older people who may not receive gifts this Christmas and who would really appreciate knowing that local people are thinking about them.”

‘Be a Santa to a Senior’, was launched in the United States in 2006 and, to date, has helped provide 1.2 million gifts to more than 700,000 older people.
