Alison recently met the new Lord Mayor of Manchester at an Age Friendly Burnage event.

He’s only been in post since May this year but already has plans to organise a Manchester Dementia week, something we’ve offered to support in any way we can.

It was great to see how engaged he was with everyone involved in the organising the event and the local people attending. Alison took the opportunity to give him one of our new WOW Guides and he was delighted with it, pronouncing it a “wonderful idea”. They also had a good chat about twiddle muffs and how to get people knitting.  He was a good sport and was happy to wear one for the photo.

Alison met loads of other great people at the event as well. From PCSO’s to Burnage in Bloom, from the people running the library to the Burnage Buddies who offer coffee, companionship and gentle exercise classes at the Community Centre – every single one of them working to making the area a better place for older people to live.

With such commitment from both the grass-roots and the folks in power, there’s no reason why South Manchester shouldn’t become truly Age Friendly.
