Health and Safety Gone Mad? No – Just Taking Risk Seriously.

Health and Safety at work has got a bit of bad rap recently, with stories of postmen refusing to cross quiet country roads and kids’ sack races being banned at Sports Days.

But don’t let tabloid stories fool you – Safety at Work really does matter, you just have to keep your common sense intact too.

Picking things up, for example – or “Manual Handling” in the jargon. We all know how to lift stuff, don’t we? Been doing it since we were a kid, right? Sure, and a lot of us do it wrong all the time – which is why 4 out of 5 people experience back pain.

Like most things in life there’s a wrong way and a right way. But unlike most things there’s a genuine risk of serious, long term injury if you go about it incorrectly – even if all you’re doing is moving a box of photocopier paper across the office. And if you think about helping a frail older person out of bed the need to know the right techniques suddenly becomes a bit more obvious.

That’s why, at Home Instead, we take Manual Handling Training seriously. For us it’s not just a question of ticking a box because the regulations say we have to. We do it to protect our CAREGivers and our Clients – because if that’s not important I don’t know what is. And if that means feeling a bit daft lying on the floor to practice the right way to help a client who’s had a fall then we think that’s a small price to pay.
