My name is Philip Keohane and I witnessed the care my father received towards the end of his life, with rushed visits each day by over-worked carers. They did their best, but they had no time to get to know Dad or understand what he liked or wanted. I honestly believe there is a better way and I am excited by the unique service Home Instead offers, showing elderly people that with the right care they can maintain their independence and their dignity and continue to enjoy their lives.
Our Clients come to us for all aspects of care including home help, personal care and companionship as we offer a very different experience to other care providers. Perhaps you are looking for some support for yourself or a loved one and knowing why Home Instead is different may be helpful, this is just a brief list of some of the reasons:
Longer Calls: With calls lasting an hour or longer there are no rushed visits ensuring our clients are treated with utmost dignity and respect. We believe quality care cannot be delivered in 15-30 minutes and that care is about the person, not merely the task. Our Clients may opt for a couple of hours support a week, several hours per day or 24 hour care, everybody has individual needs.
Prompt timely calls: We monitor all visits to ensure our CAREGivers arrive on time and stay for the required duration.
Quality of CAREGiver: Our CAREGivers receive extensive induction training, have an enhanced DBS check and we take up at least 4 references. They are well known to the office staff and are individually matched to our Clients in terms of hobbies, interests and personalities and they tend to live locally to their client. This matching enables a trusting relationship to flourish in order to ensure the best level of support for each client. They have all passed the ‘mum and dad’ test, too! “Would we want this CAREGiver looking after my Mum or Dad?
Support for our CAREGivers: This is a priority, we pay them competitively, provide holiday pay, insurance and mileage and provide an extensive training programme second to none. In addition to our Induction training there is a wide variety of in-house training as well as the opportunity to study for professional qualifications, QCF’s in Health & Social Care together and our award winning City & Guilds Dementia Training programme. We have regular get together’s, and operate an Open Door policy in the office with flexible working hours in order to support their work/life balance. Several of our CAREGivers have additional jobs, families and children or animals, others are retired with equally active social lives and commitments.
Genuine Continuity of CAREGiver: Having individually matched our clients with their CAREGiver(s) we send the same CAREGiver (or small team of CAREGivers for larger support needs) to the same client at the time the client requests.
Time of visit: When a client asks for a specific time of day (for example 8am) we visit at that time, unlike some care providers we do not have a 2 hour tolerance (meaning the 8am call may be considered ‘on time’ between 6am-10am).
Support and Quality Assurance: We have dedicated Team Leaders with many years of experience of care. They support our Clients and CAREGivers providing regular Quality Assurance Visits, Support Visits, Care Plan Reviews and One to Ones. Our Team Leaders provide an effective link for families, clients and CAREGivers and are responsible for their day-to-day care support.
Individualised Care Plans: Each client is an individual and we recognise everybody has different needs and requirements for care. Our Care Plans are therefore individually tailored to meet these needs. They also draw on a person’s background and routines. We are flexible in terms of support and are able to scale care up or down as situations change. This is one reason we are the provider of choice for those returning from a spell in hospital, following surgery or during convalescence or respite. Longer call times promote enablement and Home Instead is all about doing ‘with’ not ‘for’ a person thereby encouraging and maintaining independence for longer. Care Plans are systematically and regularly reviewed for all Clients – they are a living document.
Dementia Support: We are the leading provider of support for people living with dementia. We regularly deliver this extensive programme to CAREGivers. Longer call times and continuity of well trained, understanding, empathetic care staff are reasons why we are well suited to care of someone with dementia.
