Andrea is flying the flag for Home Instead

As the pandemic brings unemployment and an uncertain future for the job market, we at Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke-on-Trent have care vacancies to fill and are urging local people to consider a career in care. While the job losses in sectors such as retail, tourism and hospitality, the pandemic has caused a surge in demand for home care as people look to take care of their loved ones.
Andrea, a Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme CAREGiver, joined the company having had a career in the travel industry. Commenting, she said: “In my role as a flight attendant, I had a career in the travel industry. Commenting, she said: “In my role as a flight attendant, I had too many responsibilities to name! I would very often have to assist elderly passengers into their seats which meant a lot of manual handling. I sometimes had to deal with medical emergencies and on almost every flight I’d have to consider the dietary needs of certain passengers.
“I got a new job as a flight attendant in February last year, bud sadly I had to leave due to the pandemic. I was already aware of Home Instead, got in touch with my local offices, and then started a CAREGiver role. My Previous career has helped me enormously; after all, I was caring for people in the sky! I would urge anyone in my position to do the same and consider a career in care.”
We take a unique, person-centered approach to home care, which benefits both clients and CAREGivers. Clients are supported to live as independently as possible, by CAREGivers that they come to know well and who visit for a minimum of an hour at a time. CAREGivers’ duties are tailored to the needs of individual clients and range from companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, post-discharge care, personal care, shopping, and errands.
Owner, Sandra Edden, says: “Day to day life skills such as the ability to chat and listen are sometimes overlooked by jobseekers and recruiters but we’re keen to speak with these people as these skills are essential and transferable to care. Our CAREGivers come from all sorts of backgrounds and are matched to clients based on shared interests.
