For many women considering franchise ownership, the opportunity is about more than financial success alone. Increasingly, women are looking for businesses that combine commercial growth with purpose, flexibility and meaningful impact.
For more than a decade, Karina Brown, owner of Home Instead Bromley, Chislehurst & Orpington has built one of the most respected and highest-performing territories within the Home Instead network, combining operational excellence with deep community engagement and a people-first leadership style.
At Encouraging Women into Franchising (EWiF) and across the wider franchising sector, there is growing recognition that women are reshaping what successful franchise leadership looks like, building high-performing businesses while creating positive change within their communities.
Karina has recently been announced as a finalist in the 2026 EWiF Awards in the Woman Franchisee of the Year category, recognised for her compassion, innovation and unwavering commitment to her clients, team and wider community. The recognition reflects not only the success of her business, but the growing influence of women across the franchising sector.

Before joining Home Instead, Karina worked as a solicitor supporting vulnerable adults. Through that experience, she saw first-hand the gaps that existed within home care, and the impact poor-quality support could have on older people and their families.
Franchising offered an opportunity to build something different: a business grounded in professionalism, compassion and relationship-led care, while also providing the structure and support of an established brand.
Since launching her franchise, Karina has grown the business to support more than 150 clients with a team of nearly 100 Care Professionals across Bromley, Chislehurst & Orpington.
Her leadership has been shaped by clear values:
These values continue to underpin both the culture and commercial success of the business.

Women continue to play an increasingly important role within UK franchising, bringing collaborative leadership styles, strong people management skills and purpose-led business approaches that align particularly well with sectors like care.
Under Karina’s leadership, the Bromley office became the first and only Outstanding-rated home care provider in the borough, maintaining this rating for eight consecutive years. Her business has also become one of the Top 5 highest-performing Home Instead franchises in the UK.
At the same time, the organisation has consistently delivered high employee and client satisfaction scores, alongside multiple Employer Excellence Awards.
This combination of commercial performance, quality care and team culture reflects a broader shift within franchising, where long-term success is increasingly linked to leadership, values and community impact as much as financial growth alone.
One of the defining characteristics of Karina’s leadership is her focus on developing people.
Rather than seeing recruitment and retention purely as operational challenges, she has built a culture centred around coaching, development and progression. Her team benefits from:
This investment in people has helped create strong retention levels, internal progression opportunities and a highly engaged team culture.
For many women entering franchising, this style of leadership feels particularly relatable: building businesses through empowerment, collaboration and long-term development.
Karina has also become known across the Home Instead network for identifying unmet needs and turning them into scalable service innovations.
Her work developing a specialist nail care service was later approved nationally and adopted across the wider network. She has also expanded her services into Live-in Care, while continuing to explore future growth opportunities including Healthcare at Home services.
Alongside operational growth, she has personally invested in her own development, completing a professional diploma in digital marketing and contributing insights to Home Instead’s wider marketing and franchise development teams.
This willingness to continuously learn, adapt and innovate reflects the mindset increasingly shaping successful modern franchising.
Karina’s impact extends far beyond commercial performance.
She served for nine years on the Bromley Dementia Friendly Community steering committee and received the inaugural Cora Phillips Award for her contribution to dementia support across the borough. She is also currently a Trustee of Age UK Bromley & Greenwich.
Her franchise delivers up to 13 dementia-friendly Love to Move exercise sessions each month in partnership with healthcare and community organisations, alongside wider initiatives designed to support older people and families locally.
This strong community integration reflects one of the key strengths of franchising within care: the ability to build commercially successful businesses that also create meaningful local impact.
Organisations like EWIF continue to highlight the growing number of women entering franchising across the UK.
For many, franchising offers:
Within the care sector specifically, these opportunities are increasingly appealing to women looking to combine commercial ambition with social impact.
Karina’s journey demonstrates what is possible when strong leadership, purpose and franchise support come together.
As Karina reflects, “I’ve always believed that if you truly invest in people, really listen, support and develop them, they will deliver excellence for clients and for each other.
For me, franchising has provided the opportunity to build a business that combines commercial success with genuine purpose. It has allowed me to create meaningful impact within my community, develop an incredible team and continue evolving both personally and professionally.
One of the things I value most about franchising is that there is no single mould for what a successful franchise owner looks like. What matters is having the right values, being willing to learn and staying focused on delivering quality in everything you do.”
