Behind Every Home Instead Franchise: Meet Ruth Brown, Managing Director of Home Instead UK & Ireland

Strong leadership helps build strong businesses.

As part of our “Behind Every Home Instead Franchise” series, we’re introducing Ruth Brown, Managing Director of Home Instead UK & Ireland, whose leadership is helping shape the future of one of the UK’s leading home care franchise networks.

Ruth has worked in franchising throughout her career and joined Home Instead in 2010, progressing through the business before being appointed Managing Director of Home Instead UK & Ireland in 2026.

From supporting franchise owners to developing future leaders, Ruth is passionate about creating opportunities for people to build successful businesses that make a meaningful difference within their local communities.

When you join Home Instead, you’re in business for yourself – but never by yourself. Behind every successful franchise office is a National Office team of more than 70 specialists providing expert guidance across finance, network performance, care quality, operations, marketing, compliance and more. In our “Behind Every Home Instead Franchise” series, we introduce the people whose expertise helps franchise owners build strong, sustainable and purpose-led businesses across the UK and Ireland.

Leading with purpose

At Home Instead, leadership is about more than growing a business.

It’s about empowering people, supporting communities and creating an environment where franchise owners have the confidence to thrive.

For Ruth, great leadership starts by investing in people, encouraging collaboration and helping others achieve their potential. It’s an approach shaped by more than 16 years with Home Instead and a career spent within the franchise sector.

Today, Ruth leads a network of more than 265 franchise offices, bringing together the commercial strength of an established franchise model with a shared purpose: helping older people live well in their own homes.

“Becoming a Home Instead franchise owner means joining a purpose-driven business that truly changes lives. There’s the added reassurance of financial stability in a sector that continues to grow regardless of economic cycles.”

A career dedicated to franchising

Ruth’s experience extends well beyond her role as Managing Director.

She is Chair of the British Franchise Association (bfa), holds the Qualified Franchise Professional (QFP) qualification and was named Encouraging Women into Franchising (EWIF) Ambassador of the Year in 2023.

She regularly brings franchisors together to share knowledge and best practice and is a frequent speaker at franchise and care events across the UK.

This depth of experience gives Ruth a broad perspective on what makes a successful franchise relationship. For Home Instead franchise owners, it means being part of a network led by someone who understands franchising at every level, from the ambitions of an individual business owner to the opportunities and challenges facing the wider sector.

It’s this experience, combined with a genuine passion for helping others succeed, that continues to shape Ruth’s approach to leadership today.

Empowering women, strengthening communities

Home Instead is proud to champion opportunities for women across its franchise network and National Office.

Across the business, women are building successful franchise businesses, leading teams, mentoring colleagues and creating meaningful employment opportunities within their local communities.

Ruth’s own journey is a powerful example of the opportunities available within franchising, but for her, empowerment goes beyond representation.

It means creating an environment where people have the confidence, support and opportunity to develop as leaders, share their ideas and fulfil their potential.

That diversity of leadership brings different perspectives into the network, encourages collaboration and ultimately helps build stronger businesses.

For prospective franchisees, it also demonstrates that Home Instead is a network where people from different professional backgrounds and stages of their careers can bring their experience, develop as leaders and create something of their own.

Supporting the next generation of franchise owners

Whether someone is exploring franchise ownership for the first time, looking for a more rewarding second career or already has experience running businesses, Home Instead is committed to supporting them throughout their journey.

That begins before a franchise even launches.

Prospective and new franchise owners benefit from structured onboarding and training, expert guidance from National Office and connections with experienced people from across the network.

As their businesses develop, that support continues.

Franchise owners have access to expertise across finance, network performance, care & quality, operations, marketing, legal, compliance, learning & development, IT and more, alongside the experience and support of fellow franchise owners.

Mentoring, coaching and knowledge-sharing are all part of creating a network where people can learn from one another and succeed together.

For Ruth, developing future leaders is an important part of ensuring Home Instead continues to grow without losing the culture, relationships and purpose that have made the network successful.

Building businesses that make a difference

One of the things that sets Home Instead apart is the opportunity to combine commercial success with genuine social impact.

Every Home Instead franchise plays an important role within its local community, helping older people remain independent at home while creating employment opportunities and building teams of people committed to delivering outstanding care.

It means franchise owners have the opportunity to build significant businesses while knowing their success creates a positive impact for clients, families and communities.

That combination of purpose, people and commercial ambition sits at the heart of the leadership Ruth continues to champion across Home Instead UK & Ireland.

Part of a wider support network

As Managing Director, Ruth leads Home Instead’s National Office team of more than 70 specialists working across finance, network performance, care & quality, operations, marketing, legal, compliance, learning & development, IT and many other specialist functions.

Together, they provide the expertise, structure and ongoing support that underpin the success of the Home Instead franchise network across the UK and Ireland.
