Chris Dunn, co-owner of Home Instead West Dunbartonshire, Argyll & Bute and Arran, has combined 17 years of experience in human resources, a personal commitment to care and a desire to build a thriving business to help establish a successful Home Instead franchise.
Since launching in October 2021, he’s worked to build a positive work culture, nurture local connections, and deliver high-quality, person-centred care, all while enjoying the benefits that come with being part of a leading franchise business. To date, the team has delivered over 53,200 hours of care and supported 188 clients and their families, with recognition including being named a ‘Top 20 Rated Home Care Provider’ in Scotland.
Behind the scenes, Chris focuses on creating the right environment for his team to thrive, ensuring they have the tools, training and support they need. The team currently includes 35 care professionals and four key players, each contributing to a culture of openness and teamwork. He promotes open conversation, drawing on the expertise of colleagues and encouraging collaborative decision-making. As Chris puts it, “Culture is at the core of our business—act with integrity, class and care, and if that’s done properly, you’re built for success.”
Chris’s leadership goes far beyond business operations. Chris’s transition into the care sector was shaped by personal experience and a genuine empathy for others. Qualities that influence how he runs the office and engages with the wider community.
From overseeing finances to managing team dynamics, Chris is deeply involved in the day-to-day realities of running a care franchise. He’s learned to lean on those around him, recognising that supporting his team is key to delivering excellent care. This is reinforced by the support provided by Home Instead’s National Office, ensuring all franchisees across the network have all they need to thrive. In May 2024, the business reached a milestone by achieving £75,000 in monthly revenue, which is a testament to the team’s growth and commitment. Their efforts have also been formally recognised with a “Very Good” rating in their most recent Care Inspectorate report.
Chris also understands the importance of stepping outside the office. Whether leafleting in nearby towns, taking a boat to visit island communities, or attending local networking events, his focus is on building awareness and trust. Home Instead is not just a care provider; it’s a familiar and approachable part of the community.
This visibility is reinforced through participation in seasonal events like Christmas and summer fairs, where the team sets up stands to engage directly with residents, answer questions and raise awareness about available support. Chris is also an active member of the local Chamber of Commerce, championing the role of home care in business and community conversations.
Chris is also passionate about helping young people prepare for the world of work. While he previously mentored pupils at a local high school, his focus has shifted to offering work experience placements, giving students the chance to gain insight into the care sector, build confidence and develop practical skills.
Speaking about what motivates him, Chris shares: “Martin Jones, CEO of Home Instead UK and International, said it’s the hardest thing you’ll ever do but the best thing you’ll ever do. It’s the most rewarding, invigorating, exciting thing to have my own business. I do this because I feel and have empathy for helping others, no matter who or where they are. It’s not just about offering care—it’s about becoming part of the community, and looking after your team, especially your key players to ensure your clients are well cared for too. By staying involved, supporting local initiatives, and fostering genuine connections, we ensure that Home Instead isn’t just a service provider but a trusted partner in care.”
Whether stepping into the office or out in the community, Chris leads with intention, empathy and integrity, highlighting that great care starts with strong leadership, values and a genuine desire to make a difference.
