Our CAREGivers join us from all walks of life and with experience in many professions, but all share a passion for helping and caring for others. We spent time with Emilie, who recently joined our CAREGiver team and asked her some questions about life as a CAREGiver and what made her start a career in care.
What work have you done previously?
I have worked in restaurants and hotels since I was a teenager. However, when I left education I went to rural southern Ireland and worked with a group of individuals who had mental health issues while I studied a degree in psychology.
What transferrable skills do you think your previous work gave you that has been useful for working in care?
My work in restaurants and hotels has taught me to care for peoples needs and anticipate those needs. It has additionally given me the skill of staying calm in hard pressed situations while carrying out work and helping those working with me. My work with the group in Ireland taught me valuable lessons of empathy, patience and respect.
What attracted you into a career as a CAREGiver with Home Instead?
I was originally attracted to the job because of family members who were in need of care and I started to feel that being a caregiver is vital especially during the time of a pandemic when people are isolated. Home Instead looked like the best company to work with and throughout the company it felt as though they really care about the clients while assisting each individuals needs.
What myths do you think there are about care that you can dispel?
I believe that people often see care as a job that doesn’t involve creating a rapport with the client and that the job is just that - a job. I have found that the relationship you develop with the client is amazing and you look forward to seeing them each week.
What’s the best thing about your job with Home Instead?
There are so many things! I love being there for someone else and forming these relationships with someone else who can’t take care of themselves as well as they used to. I love that I am able to help another person regain their independence. The skills and training that home instead provide me have not only benefitted my work as a carer but also me as a person.
Do you have any advice to give to anyone who may be considering a career in care?
If you are looking for a rewarding and enriching career, then caring if the right role for you. However, it is important to find the right company for you, I believe that home instead is the best company there is for caring. The opportunities, training and people that work here are amazing and the whole experience is life enhancing.
