Last month, 22 year old Sai Thievemdram, from Epsom, fulfilled one of his lifelong ambitions, visiting his football heroes Manchester United in their first match of the season. Sai’s dream was made possible by Home Instead Senior Care’s Epsom office, who kindly gave their season tickets to Sai and his caregiver Cheryl Morgan.
Sai who is blind and has never actually experienced his team play in a live football game before, commented, “When I was told I was going to a Man U game, I was so excited and overwhelmed, I couldn’t wait to get to the stadium!” Ironically, Cheryl is an ardent Fulham fan (and season ticket holder) which ensured that there was plenty of friendly banter in the long car journey up to Old Trafford.
The only technical issue was that the audio commentary system at the ground was not working and as such Paul Tame (owner of the Home Instead Epsom and chauffeur for the day), stepped in to provide a running commentary which was described by Sai as being “like listening to John Motson”.
Sai who lives at Swail House, an Independent Living Facility, has been a client of Home Instead for 2 years, with Cheryl as his primary caregiver. Making a huge difference to his life, Cheryl visits Sai for 10 hours a week and takes part in fun activities like football and Indian drumming, as well as helping with household chores.
As an added bonus, another one of Sai’s heroes, Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt, happened to be sitting a few rows in front. Sai explained, “Manchester United ended up winning 3-2, it was such a great end to an amazing day. I can’t thank Home Instead enough for giving me this fantastic surprise, I’ll remember it for a long time to come.”
