What is it really like to be a CAREGiver?

If you are new to the world of care, you may have heard hundreds of people tell you what it’s like to be a carer and what caring means to them, but until you have experienced it, it can be hard to know what to expect or what you want out of it. At Home Instead Birmingham, we have employed many CAREGivers, and we know that not all carers have the same skills, experiences, or motivations, yet they are all great in their own way.

Just like every one of our clients looks for different things from their CAREGivers, each one of our CAREGivers looks for different things from their caring experience. Caring is a challenging and multi-faceted job, that comes with its own unique set of highs and lows, and we are confident that every one of our CAREGivers would tell you that it is ultimately one of the most rewarding things they have done.

But how can you know if it is for you? What exactly would you be doing? What if you don’t get on with one of your clients?

These are questions that we are sure many potential carers have asked before, and while us at Home Instead can offer you answers to these questions, there is nothing quite like hearing about a carer’s true experiences.

One of our CAREGivers, John, cares for an elderly man in his own home in the Maypole area. John started caring for his client at the start of the year, and the two have become firm friends since then, and while there is a team of three carers that see to the needs of this gentleman, he always requests John for days where he would like a good chat or to get out and about.

The gentleman John cares for used to travel a lot when he was younger, and often tells John about his travels across the different corners of the UK, as well as further afield to other countries. At the start of the summer, John thought it would be a good idea to give his client a bit of that travel bug back, and offered to take him on a trip to Stratford Upon Avon for a couple of days.

John accompanied the gentleman on his holiday, and they both enjoyed having the chance to be among different surroundings and explore the area. With John’s presence and support, the gentleman was able to feel completely relaxed and at ease during his time away, and also knew that his wife wouldn’t worry if he had John there to support him.

Without John’s help and support, the gentleman in question would likely not have been able to enjoy a carefree summer holiday and explore a new town as he once did.

There are many different areas of care, yet when considering it, a lot of people would only think of the personal care elements, such as help with washing and dressing. However, while these are certainly necessary parts of some people’s care, they are only part of wider and more comprehensive care programme. At Home Instead Birmingham, we ensure that whatever needs a client has are always met with friendship and companionship. We take the time to match each of our clients with our CAREGivers to make sure that similar personalities and mutual interests exist that allow a great bond of friendship to grow as it did with John and his client.
