Be Heat Aware Says Elderly Care Specialist

Local award winning at-home care company, Home Instead Senior Care based in New Street, Newport, is advising members of the community to help older people to take precautions as temperatures across the UK continue to soar.

Owner of Home Instead, Jason Warren, who provide care to older people so that they can continue to live safe and well  in their own homes , commented, “I think it’s safe to say that the weather so far this summer makes a welcome change from recent years, but it is vital that we remain aware of the health risks that the heat can bring.

“For many older people, their bodies are often unable to adjust to sudden changes or constant extreme high or low temperatures. They are more likely to have medical conditions that can change normal body responses to heat and they may well be on medication which can also impair their ability to regulate their temperature. Therefore it is particularly important that precautions are taken to ensure that they are able to enjoy the sun and the warmth safely.

“I would urge people to look out for vulnerable elderly relatives and neighbours as the hot weather continues. It is just the same as when we have adverse weather conditions in winter, we need to look out for each other.

“We’re advising our clients and older people in the community to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm and when they do go out to seek out shady areas, wear sunscreen, a hat, loose cotton clothing and sunglasses when being outside is necessary. We would also highly recommend drinking plenty of cold drinks to avoid dehydration and keeping the curtains closed on windows which are in direct sunlight. We know we all like keeping our gardens tidy and doing our housekeeping but now is a good reason to take it a bit easier and do jobs around the house in the cooler morning and evening periods.

This summer, really has been record breaking so far, and by following this simple advice we can keep our loved ones well, so that we can all enjoy a truly great British Summer.
