A&E crisis: Burnham stresses crucial link with social care

As the worst A&E crisis on record continues to grip the NHS http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jan/06/hospital-a-and-e-waiting-times-worst-record-nhs-england, Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham today highlighted the vital role of social care in helping to solve the problem.

The MP for Leigh, who visited Home Instead in 2014 (http://bit.ly/14oisZx), told Sky News that “the crisis in social care could drag down the NHS”, with record numbers of older people trapped in hospital – adding to pressure on the health service. http://news.sky.com/story/1403440/a-and-e-crisis-summit-demanded-by-labour

He stressed the vital importance of properly funded adult social care services to work in tandem with the NHS – providing an alternative to hospital care for the UK’s growing elderly population.

High quality home care – such as that provided by Home Instead’s national network – is a key part of this solution.   When he visited our national office in April last year, Mr Burnham was keen to understand more about our unique model of care – and was impressed by our focus on personalised support and longer care visits.

“The record crisis in A&E is yet another wake-up call for improvement in how the UK cares for its elderly.  I am proud of the role that Home Instead plays in ensuring that older people can continue to live safely and happily in their own homes for as long as possible”.
