reablement care

What is reablement care?

Reablement care is a type of care designed to help people regain strength and independence after a significant health setback, such as recovery from a fall, illness, major surgery, or hospital stay. Research has shown this can lead to improved health outcomes, less time spent in hospital, and an increase in perceived quality of life compared to other home care services. Reablement care might include tasks like:

  • Assisting with safe mobility
  • Assisting with personal care tasks until they can manage alone
  • Taking over cooking during recovery
  • Helping maintain usual routines
  • Facilitating social connections to avoid isolation
  • Improve confidence and independence to continue with day-to-day life

Why is reablement care at home helpful for older adults?

The goal of reablement care is to improve a person’s functionality enough to enable them to continue living in their own home and doing the things they love. There are many benefits to this service, such as being able to recover in familiar surroundings, having clear recovery goals that are relevant to the person’s own life, having support tailored to their own environment, having more opportunities for visits with loved ones, and even having financial peace of mind by avoiding reablement care in potentially expensive care homes.Research suggests maintaining independent living at home could improve health perception and self-efficacy in older adults, so this could have many benefits for this age group.

Do I need reablement care?

If you are about to leave hospital after an injury or major surgery that has impacted your mobility, or a bad illness that requires monitoring or medications, you may be wondering how you will carry on with your usual routines at home. Unexpected life events could make it difficult or impossible to do things that were once simple for you, like moving around safely, getting up to use the bathroom, or cooking meals on your own. If you are worried about how you will manage alone, reablement care could be exactly what you need. Not only will this aim to improve your mobility so you feel capable of doing your regular routines, it can also enhance your confidence, enabling you to live life the way you did before, or as close to this as possible

I have worked with Home Instead since July 2016 as a member of the Quality Team, taking the role of Head of Quality & Standards in 2020.

Before joining Home Instead, I built a comprehensive career in the social care sector, beginning in 1991 as a frontline care worker and advancing to senior leadership roles across both private and voluntary sector businesses.

Throughout my career, I have supported diverse care groups in a variety of settings, including community, residential, nursing, and secure environments. My experience spans working with older adults, including those living with dementia; individuals with physical disabilities and complex, long-term health needs; people with learning disabilities, including autism; individuals with enduring mental health challenges; individuals with current or past substance use and those with forensic backgrounds.

In 2002, I qualified as a social worker and have since maintained my professional registration with Social Work England.
