What is adult care?

Adult care is a form of person-centred care for people over the age of 18 who live with a disability or chronic health condition and need help with certain aspects of daily life. Adult care enables them to remain at home and have agency over the way they live their life, such as deciding their routine and engaging in hobbies.

Our Care Professionals take time to learn exactly how each person likes things done, and can assist with certain tasks while supporting independence in others.

Adult care might include a combination of services such as:

Why is this type of care helpful for older adults?

A 2021 UK disability survey suggested that many disabled people reside in homes which are not set up for their needs in order to live independently, so visiting or live-in care could provide them with more support to live life the way they want to.

Many elderly adults may live with a disability or health condition that limits their abilities, such as a neurological disorder or a mobility issue. For those who would like to be less reliant on family members, bespoke adult care from our highly trained Care Professionals could have a hugely positive impact on their day-to-day life and independence, enabling them to maintain a career, study for school, socialise with friends, enjoy hobbies, travel locally or go on trips, and much more.

Do I need adult care?

Many elderly adults living with a disability or health condition can manage on their own or with the help of a family member, while others may need more assistance. The 2021 Census reported 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK, so it is important to recognise when family caregivers may require regular respite care to take over so they can have a break.

There are also many younger adults with similar challenges who still desire to have their own space, routines and hobbies without their family’s involvement in order to facilitate more independence. If this is the case for you, receiving adult care from a professional caregiver could allow you to experience a more independent way of living without being dependent on parents, siblings, friends or other relations.

I have worked with Home Instead since July 2016 as a member of the Quality Team, taking the role of Head of Quality & Standards in 2020.

Before joining Home Instead, I built a comprehensive career in the social care sector, beginning in 1991 as a frontline care worker and advancing to senior leadership roles across both private and voluntary sector businesses.

Throughout my career, I have supported diverse care groups in a variety of settings, including community, residential, nursing, and secure environments. My experience spans working with older adults, including those living with dementia; individuals with physical disabilities and complex, long-term health needs; people with learning disabilities, including autism; individuals with enduring mental health challenges; individuals with current or past substance use and those with forensic backgrounds.

In 2002, I qualified as a social worker and have since maintained my professional registration with Social Work England.
