What is sleep-in care?

Sleep-in care is a type of overnight care where a caregiver sleeps within an older person’s home overnight to provide care when needed. This is usually arranged for older people who:

  • Have health or care needs that are not considered intensive, and don’t need constant check-ins
  • Prefer company in the home to minimise loneliness – data shows 1.4 million older people in the UK say they are often lonely, so having someone in the home could help
  • Need mobility assistance to reach the bathroom or manage incontinence
  • Need regular medication management overnight
  • Have mild dementia and would feel safer with sleep-in care

There are many benefits to sleep-in care, including peace of mind for families. You can learn more in our guide to what overnight care is.

What is wake-in care?

Wake-in care is a type of overnight care where a caregiver remains in an older person’s home overnight, but stays awake. This is usually arranged for those who:

  • Need frequent medical help, such as administering medications, stoma support, or catheter changes
  • Have advanced dementia and are at risk of wandering during the night
  • Struggle to sleep and need their usual daytime care routine extended to nighttime
  • Need regular medical monitoring, such as after a surgery, or while recovering from illness
  • Are going through palliative care or end-of-life care

Data from 2021 estimates 3.3 million people aged 65 and over live alone in England and Wales, so for those with more severe care needs, it may be necessary to have wake-in care on hand if ever needed.

Does my older loved one need sleep-in care or wake-in care?

Whether your loved one needs sleep-in care or wake-in care will be determined by their level of dependence on others. Sleep-in care may be sufficient to address their needs if they usually sleep through the night but occasionally need help, or would feel safer knowing they are not alone. Wake-in care is more suitable for those with frequent needs who wake overnight in need of assistance to move around, take medications, get comfortable, or something else.

This may be especially helpful for those living with dementia who tend to experience more fear, worry, and potential wandering. It helps to discuss their preference, speak to their GP about any dangers of leaving them unsupervised overnight, and consider what their most frequent needs are.

How to get started finding and arranging either sleep-in or wake-in care

To begin arranging sleep-in or wake-in care, reach out to your local council to organise a Care Needs Assessment to determine their needs, and what the most effective arrangement would be. For example, they may find live-in care is best to address their needs day or night.

Private care is also an option, offering flexible sleep-in or wake-in care that can be combined with more specialist care like dementia care to ensure your loved one receives the tailored support they need.

Keep in mind, sleep-in or wake-in care might also benefit family caregivers who are currently sacrificing sleep in order to care for an older loved one. Around 1 in 4 carers reported having “not good health”, so either form of overnight care could make a huge difference.
