The strict routines, lack of privacy and multiple carers involved are reasons that our live-in care service is often considered in place of a move to a care home. For many elderly people, the move can be stressful and upsetting whereas a dedicated live-in carer from Home Instead can make life much more comfortable for them as well as improving their sense of well-being and interest in life. Our Care Professionals are carefully selected ensuring a good match to the older person’s health needs, interests and personality.

Home Instead cared for my mother and then father over a three year period. They were very professional in identifying needs and devising a care plan. They were very reliable and never missed a call (my parents had four a day). When I needed to add calls they were accommodating. I would recommend them to anyone else who finds themselves needing help looking after their parents.
Paul M – Clients Family

My parents really looked forward to visits from the carers at Home Instead Calderdale. Without fail everyone was caring, friendly, cheerful and very practical in dealing with my parents’ care needs. They also always turned up on time, which was important when my Dad was at home on his own. On several occasions they went above and beyond to help with minor emergencies and always kept us informed about what was going on. Amazingly they also found time to sit and chat with my parents, which made the visits feel more social than formal care.

I cannot praise this organisation highly enough! Thanks to Home Instead, my elderly aunt was able to remain in her own home until the end of her life, despite increasing frailty and suffering from dementia. Initially, she had regular daily visits and then 24/7 live-in care. This meant so much to her and her family, as a move into care after decades in the same home would have been confusing and very distressing for her.
Adrian B – Nephew of Client Pt 1

The Home Instead team were brilliant and everyone I spoke to was friendly and full of care for her.
When there were things I needed to know, they would always contact me to update me, without being over-intrusive. They treated my aunt with total dignity and respect at all times, organising her social life, arranging a birthday party for her 90th birthday and many of them came to her funeral too, to pay their final respects, where it was clear the genuine love and affection they had for her.
Adrian B – Nephew of Client Pt 2

A big thank you to the staff and carers from Home instead, who without their support, we could not have managed to keep Dad in his own home. Such a caring, supportive, helpful and reliable team. Our main caregiver, was truly dedicated, to my father, ensuring his personal care and appearance was of a high standard. The house was kept clean and tidy and the bedding and clothing washed and dried. They were friendly, helpful and became great friends and felt like one of the family. Any problems or issues were reported to us and dealt with. They even arranged with the relevant departments re the acquisition of equipment for the house.

This is a really wonderful organisation. The carers are lovely, patient and professional. The admin team are super, responsive and friendly. I cannot praise them enough for the care they provided to our mum in her last months at home. They certainly afforded our family peace of mind at this time. I would highly recommend them to any family considering home care for a senior loved one. Thank you all again!
Maria B – Daughter of Client

We used Home Instead for the first time in September 2022 and the experience was excellent in all respects. My wife and I look after my mother (95 years old) at home and we needed someone to cover for us while we went on holiday for two weeks. The care manager obviously thought very carefully about which carer would be a good fit for Mum before introducing her to us. We had an introductory visit at home and a follow up to cover any questions before we went away. It worked perfectly. Daily Scrabble games, some trips out to the local park, lunches and dinners prepared. They got on with each other very well. Everything was in perfect order when we got home and we had a good chat with the carer before she departed.

Search here if you cannot see your town or postcode - Is Home Instead Calderdale a locally owned home care organisation?
Home Instead Calderdale is one of 250 locally owned offices that collectively form Home Instead UK. Together, we care for 16,000 clients, delivering one million hours of home care each month. This unique combination of community-focused local offices and the resources of a national network enables us to provide personalised, relationship-led care while leading research and innovation that is transforming the experience of aging. Our services include companionship care, personal care, specialist care (including dementia, palliative, and Parkinson’s), and live-in care.
Search here if you cannot see your town or postcode - What local support is available?
Ensuring reliable live-in care means having robust support ready to handle any changes or emergencies. It’s important to ask how a provider manages carers schedules, especially if adjustments are needed or if a carer is unavailable.
At Home Instead we maintain a comprehensive local team that coordinates alternative arrangements in situations such as if the Care Professional is ill, without disrupting care continuity – ensuring your loved one always receives the attention they need.
- Are your carers employed or are they self-employed?
There are broadly two types of live-in care providers: self-employed carers and professional care companies. Self-employed carers typically offer flexibility and may cost less, but they often lack regulation, comprehensive training, and insurance, which can impact the quality and reliability of care.
Professional care companies, like Home Instead, directly employ Care Professionals who are rigorously trained and fully background-checked and insured. These employees are covered under the company’s policies, including national insurance and payroll, ensuring a secure, and high-standard care environment.
- What qualifications do your carers have?
Training and qualifications are vital in ensuring live-in carers deliver high-quality care. It’s a good idea to ask about the providers training levels and certifications.
Home Instead’s Care Professionals receive comprehensive training in areas such as mobility support, dementia and Parkinson’s care, catheter management, and end of life support. Our commitment to ongoing professional development ensures they are well-prepared to provide compassionate and effective care across various scenarios.
- How do you match caregivers with clients?
Compatibility between a live-in carer and client can greatly influence the quality of care. It’s beneficial to enquire about the matching process and how a provider ensures that the caregiver’s personality and skills align with the client’s needs and preferences.
At Home Instead, we carefully, match clients with one or more Care Professionals based on shared interests and care requirements to foster a comfortable and supportive relationship.
- How does your service ensure care continuity during emergencies or caregiver changes?
Continuity of care is essential, especially in emergencies or when regular live-in carers are unavailable. Ask your care provider how they handle such situations.
Home Instead has protocols in place to ensure that care continues seamlessly, with trained Care Professionals ready to step on so that your loved one’s needs are always met without interruption.
- What is live-in care?
Live-in care means a trained, professional carer will live with you in your home in order to provide the care you need on a regular basis, and support your specific needs. This is often a preferable alternative to a care home or nursing home, and it allows older people to remain living in their own home alongside a constant companion who can assist with things like personal care, specialist medical care, cooking, housework, and more.
Discover More - How much does live-in care cost?
Every live-in care package is unique to the individual client, so the best way to gauge how much this will cost you is to get in touch to discuss your loved ones needs. As a rough guide to cost, live-in care through an agency often ranges from around £1,350 to £2,000 per week in the UK, depending on their needs and other factors mentioned in our guide on cost linked below.
Discover More - How many hours does the Care Professional work?
Live-in care is not the same as 24-hour care. A Care Professional will typically work an 8 to 10 hour day. Those hours will be discussed in your initial assessment and tailored to suit the needs of the person receiving care. A live-in Care Professional is of course on hand in case of emergencies, but it is not generally expected that they will provide ongoing night care. The Care Professional also needs to have breaks throughout the day, and other Care Professionals may visit the home if a wrap-around care service is offered, giving the main care provider their needed breaks without any interruption in support.
- What will a live-in Care Professional require?
A live-in Care Professional must have their own bedroom for personal space. It is also typically expected that the home has an internet connection. Arrangements for food will be discussed in your consultation, but the Care Professional typically receives a weekly food allowance to purchase food for themselves. Live-in Care Professionals may cook and eat with their clients, or they may decide to do this separately, depending on the dietary requirements and personal preferences of everyone involved.
- What are the benefits of live-in care at home?
Live-in care at home empowers the elderly to maintain their independence, dignity, and a sense of control over their lives, while still receiving dedicated, comprehensive support. By far the main benefit is that live-in care allows care recipients to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, which can significantly enhance emotional well-being and quality of life. This form of care is highly personalised, adapting to the specific needs and routines of the individual, ensuring tailored support for daily activities, medication management, mobility assistance, and more. The one-on-one nature of live-in care fosters a strong bond between the Care Professional and care recipient, providing companionship and reducing feelings of isolation. Staying at home eliminates the disruption and stress often associated with moving to a care facility, and even 24 hour live-in home care can also be considerably more cost-effective than residential care options, as it avoids facility fees which can often be extremely steep.
