What Is Live-in Care?

We believe in helping people maintain independence, dignity and joy in later life.
Care options
There are a number of options for care at home, including hourly care, overnight care, all-day care, respite care and live-in care; here we look at live-in care in more detail.
Live-in care means that a trained carer will live in your home, with you, in order to provide the specific support that you need throughout the day. This can be preferable to a care home because you will be able to continue your usual way of life, in the comfort and familiarity of your own home, and avoid a transfer into a completely new environment.

Why would you need live-in care?
It can be difficult to say when live-in care is the best home care option, but here are some illustrations:
- If you need support at various points throughout the day, such as personal care in the mornings, help with housework or lunch, someone to take you out or provide companionship in the afternoons, and help to prepare for bed in the evenings, you might prefer to have a single carer perform all these tasks and avoid the comings and goings of a number of separate visits.
- Someone with ill health may prefer to have a carer with them throughout the day to help deal with health concerns as and when they arise.
- If complex care needs, arising for example from mobility, sight or hearing problems, cause you to struggle at home, you may prefer to have a trained person readily on hand to help when needed.
- For someone living with dementia, a live-in carer can provide the familiar face they need throughout the day to feel safe, comfortable and less lonely.
- Sometimes an elderly person is unable to settle in a care home but needs a high level of care support, which can be provided at home through a live-in carer.
- If just one partner of a couple needs significant care support but they want to remain together and the second partner is not ready for a care home, live-in care can be the ideal solution.

What services can live-in care provide?
The live-in carer’s tasks can cover just about any support the client needs, but here are a few examples:
- Companionship – the comfort of a familiar face and someone to talk to, take you out, help with personal care or tricky home tasks, and keep you safe.
- Convalescence – temporary support at home whilst recovering from challenging injury, illness or surgery
- Complex – more specialised care for those living with dementia or Parkinson’s
- Respite – temporary cover for family members or other carers whilst they take a break
- Palliative – to enable someone to spend this most difficult time in the comfort of their own home.
