Colourful exercise at Lets Move

Let’s Move - Seated Exercise Sessions

Let’s Move is an exciting opportunity for the elderly and anyone with mobility concerns to exercise in a safe, fun environment.  We do seated exercises along to music, all designed to be safe, fun and aimed at the older generation to improve fitness, memory and wellbeing.  It’s free to attend and free refreshments will be provided.

As you get older, you might start to get aches and pains that you never had before, have less energy to go out, and become more vulnerable to falling. As a result you may struggle to continue enjoying the simple pleasures that you used to take for granted - like playing with the grandchildren, walking to the shops, or keeping in touch with friends and neighbours.

If you want to stay healthy and maintain your independence, it becomes even more important to remain active.  Physical exercise can also help to improve your immune function, reduce your blood pressure, boost your metabolism, improve your balance and flexibility, and generally reduce the risk of serious conditions.  As they say, “Use It or Lose It”.

Let’s Move will help you remain pain-free, independent and healthy as you get older. We have participants with Parkinson’s Disease, dementia, joint replacements and strokes, and some younger family members also join in.

There are six public and two private Let's Move sessions per week:

Some comments we've received:

"I signed my mum up for this class hoping that it would not only be good for her but would also cheer her up after the lockdown year. I decided to stay and join in and it was just wonderful. The ladies running it are full of energy and fun and their enthusiasm is very infectious. The music was great and really suited the class, and mum was singing along and did so well with the seated exercises. We chatted with some of the other ladies who attended at the end of the class and had no hesitation signing up again for next week. I just know that this will be something that mum and I will look forward to each week.
Thank you"

Carol and (Mum) Joyce

"It was a brilliant class - my mum LOVED it, thank you.
We'll definitely be back weekly !!!"
- Suzanne

“This is just what Mum needed.  It was the first time I’ve seen her smiling in a long time” - Jane

“It was lovely to be able to actually take part in an exercise session” – lady who is living with Parkinson’s Disease

Need more details about the exercises we do ?

Our seated exercise sessions are planned to give an all-round safe, fun workout and to be fully inclusive.
Each session is different. While we work the core muscles every time, emphasis is placed on a different muscle set at each session.

Here is our range of props and their uses:

Music                   Various playlists of music from 50’s & 60’s
PomPoms           Focus - strength & co-ordination of arms
Balls                     Focus - strength, control and co-ordination of all limbs
Batons                 Focus - counting, stamina & keeping beat with the music
Rings                    Focus - hand-eye co-ordination,
Hoops                  Focus - flexibility, arms, shoulders & back
Parachute            Focus - arms & shoulders - encourages teamwork
Resist Bands       Focus - muscle strength of all limbs
No Props              Focus - stamina & cardio

Alternative movements are suggested in-session to cater for anyone with physical limitations.

The speed of exercises can be discreetly regressed in-session so that participant(s) with dementia or brain injury, for example, have extra time to process and execute the movements.

Music from the 50’s & 60’s is selected for cognition, to activate memories; singing along also challenges lungs and vocal chords.
At the end of each session we have a big push to develop extra lung capacity & vocal strength.

Components of each class:

Warm-up, Flexibility, Aerobic, Strength, Balance, Stretch, Cool down

The benefits we seek to achieve:

  • Exercise improves flexibility and range of motion, it increases heart rate and blood circulation
  • Improves posture and balance, thus reducing the risk of falls
  • Reduces joint stiffness and pain
  • Improves concentration, mood and feeling of wellbeing
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Introduces inclusion and team playing at an enjoyable, social event
  • Improves quality of life
