Welcome to the latest issue of Older Wiser Together (OWT) and Happy New Year!

The aim of OWT is to become a trusted and valued part of our community, particularly for those aged 50 or over who may be looking for new opportunities, social events, and challenges, as well as tips for independent living. We cover from Bude, Launceston, Callington, Holsworthy, Okehampton, Tavistock, Saltash and Torpoint.  We hope you’ll find useful information on initiatives and activities in your area.

The end of 2023 was a time for gathering our teams together to thank them for all their hard work and to acknowledge some stand out contributions.

We always welcome feedback, constructive criticism, and submissions for OWT, particularly from those of you with professional or charitable links to our community. Do get in touch if you have something you’d like to share. Please feel free to forward this Newsletter to family, friends, and colleagues.

Best wishes,

The Older Wiser Together Team.

Home Instead Awards 2023

Everyday our Care Professionals do amazing work with their clients and are the underground heart of the community.  So unseen to many, they are an integral part of the health and social care.

Shini was nominated as our Care Professional of the Year and received a card and voucher from National Office. Our joint Team Players of the Year went to Angela, Jodie and Sarah, all pictured above.

Parrots, Reindeers and Parties

Okey Memory Cafe has been a resounding success of 2023.  Starting early in 2023, Okey Memory Cafe is an important service to those on their journey with dementia and their loved ones – we love being part of it!

Through December, the members enjoyed an afternoon with Plymouth Parrots, ate lots of yummy food at the Christmas party and had fun with Nerf guns shooting at the reindeer!  Vicky and Clare were the reindeers!

Dementia Coordinator is Busy!

As a result of the fantastic success of being awarded a very substantial grant by the National Lottery,Tavistock Dementia Alliance now has a part time Dementia Coordinator.

Amanda is tremendously busy out in the community and has met with over 20 organisations in just the few months.  There are lots of exciting plans to help make Tavistock even more dementia friendly so watch this space!

Myth Busting

Just a Carer? No such thing!  There’s nothing more powerful than the ability to change somebody’s life for the better every day, whether that’s simply keeping them company, or offering more advanced personal or dementia care.  As a Care Professional, you can make a world of difference to people’s lives the minute you step through your client’s door, helping them to live independently with exceptional care. Do you know someone who would make a great Care Professional?  Why not forward them this email.

Tavistock Dementia Alliance Coop Local Cause

Tavistock Dementia Alliance has been successful in its bid to be the Coop Local Cause for the coming year.

Although the TDA has a significant grant from the National Lottery they still require an amount of match funding to be able to fully fund their part time employee over 5 years.  If you can support the TDA and make it your local cause for this year, please do follow this linkCoop Local Cause.

Healthy Ageing Tips

We can be full of resolutions at this time of year. However, little tweaks to our lifestyles can help us to live healthier.  It can be hard to change eating habits but eating more fibre at each meal is a good choice – try lentils, porridge and nuts.  Exercise is key for us all but is particularly good for those with dementia and Parkinsons. Look out for seated exercise programmes like our Love to Move sessions.  How about a daily word puzzle or going back to knitting as our client Vi has done with the help of her Care Professionals.

Live-in Care

Live-in care involves a specially chosen Care Professional moving into their client’s home. They provide companionship and practical support throughout the day, enabling that person to continue living the life they have always known and doing the things they enjoy the most. Families have peace of mind knowing there is someone supporting their loved one on an ongoing basis, not only providing daily support but company too. We know that finding care isn’t easy. With so many options and choices, it can be hard to know where to turn. But our care begins with you. By spending more time listening and understanding your circumstances than anyone else, we’re confident we can help you get through it. So give us a call and we’ll help you find the answer, with no pressure to make a decision right away. Read morehere.
