Staying safe in the Heatwave, Home Instead's top tips!

With the weather recently hitting temperatures as high as 35 degrees and with this forecast to continue, Home Instead Sheffield have put together some tips on how to stay safe during the heat wave.

Following the MET office’s Level 2 Health alert, Home Instead have actioned a Heat wave alert plan to assure the safety of our elderly clients across Sheffield.

Home Instead’s action plan will involve notifying all CAREGivers of the dangers that a heat wave can cause older people.

Our CAREGivers will be spending time with our clients like normal however will be keeping a close eye for signs such as heat stroke as older people’s bodies sometimes find it difficult to adjust to sudden changes in temperature.

Home Instead are advising clients to take plenty of fluids on board and eat normally during the hot weather.

Here are Home Instead’s top tips to stay safe during the Heat wave:

Avoid the hottest time – Temperatures reach their peak during 11am and 3pm, however this can vary. If you do need to go out make sure you aren’t out for lengthy periods and find shade when you can.

Hydration – You might not feel thirsty put drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost through sweat.

Pick a spot – Find the coolest area of your house to make camp, keeping curtains and blinds closed prevents the sun heating up rooms, so close these in places like the bedroom.

Light clothes – Loose, light clothes will allow your body to breathe, linen or cotton are ideal textures.

Cool down – cool showers and baths will regulate your temperature, also placing a cold flannel on your wrists, neck and inner elbows will help cool you down.

Caps and hats – wearing a cap or hat will help keep your face in the shade and prevent the sun beating down on your head

Windows – only if it is safe, leave windows at night to reduce room temperature

Electricals – turn off your non-essential lights and electrical items, these are just adding more heat to the room.

Mirrors – be careful of mirrors that are in contact with the sun, these can reflect the heat onto items which can catch fire.

Medication – coping with temperatures can also be affected by medication. Medication that affects blood pressure will mean the body has to work harder to keep cool.
