Our 'Out Instead' project continues, this time in Axminster...

'Waffle' is a great addition to our 'Out Instead' list

The market town of Axminster is next on our travel list, as we explore our lovely Exeter and East Devon region as part of our ‘Out Instead’ project.

The Community Waffle House is a 100% non-profit café and community space with a delicious menu, centred around it’s now famous – and delicious – Liège waffles! There are of course lots of other items on the menu, and we will touch on that later…

‘Waffle’ as it’s known locally, offers community members a free and welcoming space to ‘Waffle Work’ – with 24 hot desk spaces available, free of charge and complete with IT support from the team – a sense of fun through ‘Waffle Play’ – with a child friendly ‘Fort Waffle’ area for younger visitors – and for older ‘gamers’ there are a variety of evening games clubs, operated in conjunction with Avid Games.

The true spirit of the Waffle House is to bring the community together, and the team – brothers Matt and Simon, fellow Directors Sophie and Tim and many more contributors, including a number of volunteers, are passionate about this aspect.

It’s a welcoming space for each and every member of the community, inclusive of age and stage. With our older clients in mind, there is a dedicated Senior Citizens morning on a Wednesday and we are pleased to say, plans are in place for Home Instead to support Waffle with some events in the future, alongside other local care sector organisations, being Age UK and also the local community Dementia teams.

There are also Talking Cafés, Creative Meet Ups, a monthly Book Club, Knit & Natter group, Men Let’s Talk session, Walking Group and on a Friday evening, Waffle Live: featuring open mics, events and live music.

On a practical note, access to Waffle is easy, as the café has a bus stop directly outside, a small number of free car parking bays are available in the courtyard area opposite, there’s paid parking in West Street and also via the nearby Coop store – all with a level a reasonably level approach to the doors of the café.

Whilst the Waffle House is on the first floor, that’s no obstacle – there is a lift! The restaurant is bright and airy and has a great atmosphere with plants and quirky décor that fits the essence of Waffle perfectly, with a variety of seating choices. Waffle House overlooks the St Mary’s Church green and offers the perfect place to watch the comings and goings in this lovely town.

Menu wise, guests can enjoy a signature waffle of course – in an enormous variety of forms – but the café also offers traditional items like toasted tea cakes, soups and cakes.

For so many reasons, we are thrilled to include The Community Waffle House on our ‘Out Instead’ list and to recommend it to Clients, Care Professionals, friends and family as a great place to visit for breakfast, brunch or lunch, or importantly – just for a chat. Perfect!
