Home Instead Epping Forest welcomed local people to its July Memory Lane Café on Wednesday 8 July, bringing together practical safety advice, live music and plenty of friendly conversation.

Despite the exceptionally hot weather, the event was well attended. Guests enjoyed a relaxed and welcoming space where they could meet others, learn more about staying safe at home and share an uplifting afternoon together.

Our Memory Lane Café is one of the regular community events organised by our team for people living with dementia, their families, carers and members of the local community.

Practical fire safety advice for older people and families

A special guest from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service joined the July session to discuss fire safety in the home.

Their informative presentation included practical steps that older people, family members and carers can take to reduce common fire risks. The team also brought useful handouts and explained how residents may be able to access a free home fire safety visit.

These visits can offer personalised advice, help identify possible risks and provide reassurance for older people and their families. They may be particularly valuable for someone who lives alone or a family supporting a person living with dementia to remain safely at home.

The talk prompted plenty of questions and conversations among those attending. It also reflected an important part of Home Instead Epping Forest’s approach: helping people continue living safely, confidently and independently in familiar surroundings.

Five simple fire safety tips for the home

– Fit a working smoke alarm on every level of the home. Smoke alarms provide an early warning and should be tested at least once a month.

– Never leave cooking unattended. Take particular care with pans, grills and hot oil, and switch appliances off once cooking is finished.

– Keep exits and hallways clear. Make sure everyone can reach the front or back door easily, especially at night or if mobility is limited.

– Avoid overloading electrical sockets. Check plugs, leads and appliances for damage, and do not use equipment with frayed or exposed wiring.

– Plan what to do if a fire starts. Get out, stay out and call 999. Do not attempt to tackle the fire yourself.

Essex residents can also request a free Home Safety Visit for personalised advice and help with smoke alarms.

Music and memories with Kevin

After the fire safety discussion, Kevin brought music and energy to the room with his guitar and singing.

Familiar songs encouraged guests to sing along, tap their feet and share memories. The atmosphere quickly became lively and relaxed, with plenty of smiles and conversation.

Music can offer a meaningful way to connect with someone living with dementia. A familiar melody may prompt memories, encourage participation or simply create an enjoyable shared moment.

Home Instead Epping Forest also supports its Care Professionals to understand how music can support mood, memory and connection during care visits.

Kevin’s performances have become a much-enjoyed part of Memory Lane, and July’s session was no exception.

Staying safe during hot weather

With temperatures particularly high, the Home Instead Epping Forest team made hydration and comfort a priority throughout the afternoon.

Bottled water was readily available, and guests were encouraged to drink regularly and stay cool. Older people can be more vulnerable to dehydration and heat-related illness, so small precautions can make an important difference during very warm weather.

Families and carers can help by making drinks easily accessible, offering fluids regularly and checking that the person they support is comfortable.

A welcoming local community

July’s Memory Lane Café combined useful information with music, companionship and an opportunity to meet others locally.

For older people and their families, community sessions like these can provide more than an enjoyable afternoon. They offer a chance to ask questions, discover local support and spend time with people who understand some of the experiences families may be facing.

Regular social contact can also help older people feel connected and involved. For those who would benefit from additional company at home or support getting out into the community, Home Instead Epping Forest provides personalised companionship care.

Home Instead Epping Forest would like to thank Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, Kevin and everyone who joined the July session and helped make the afternoon so enjoyable.
